Travis Scott’s Astroworld Tragedy: Fans Previously Complained About How Expensive Tickets Were
Rapper Travis Scott has been making headlines after his Astroworld Festival became the site of tragic deaths.
Before this incident, tickets to the festival were highly sought after. In fact, some fans even complained about how much money they needed to spend in order to secure tickets.
Multiple people died on the first day of Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival
On Nov. 5, Astroworld Festival 2021 commenced its first day. The festival is an annual event that takes place in NRG Park in Scott’s hometown of Houston, Texas.
According to CNN, that evening, there were 50,000 people at the festival. Just after 9 p.m., during Scott’s performance, a crowd surge occurred.
“The crowd for whatever reason began to push and surge towards the front of the stage, which caused the people in the front to be compressed — they were unable to escape that situation,” Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña during a press conference the next morning.
At least eight people died. Twenty-three people were hospitalized, while over 300 people sustained injuries.
Scott released a statement on Nov. 6, saying, “I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night. My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival. Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life.”
The second night of the festival, which was scheduled for Nov. 6, was canceled.
Fans previously complained about how expensive Astroworld Festival tickets were
Astroworld Festival tickets went on sale back in May. At the time, many fans were clamoring to buy them. However, a number of them also took to social media to complain about the prices.
According to XXL Mag, the general admission price back in 2019 was $179 for a two-day pass. However, in 2021, it jumped to $300 plus $65 in fees. Additionally, the outlet noted, “the two-day Stargazing VIP passes were $725 plus a $69 fee and the top tier tickets, the two-day No Bystander VIP ticket, were $1,000 with a $78 fee.”
XXL Mag also shared some reactions from fans on Twitter about the prices of the festival. Many of them joked that these prices should mean there are perks, such as having late rappers Biggie Smalls and Tupac perform.
As reported by Billboard, there were 100,000 tickets available, and they all sold out within an hour. Some proceeds are also donated to Scott’s Cactus Jack Foundation, a charity organization that assists young people in getting an education and creative resources.
A similar stampede occurred at Astroworld Festival 2019
Back in 2019, during the second year of Astroworld Festival, a similar stampede occurred. According to NY Daily News, three people were hospitalized after being trampled at the entrance of the festival.
“Just minutes before the gates were set to open, attendees climbed over barriers and raced toward the entrance of the venue, according to ABC 13,” the outlet reported. “Three people were injured in the subsequent stampede and transported to Memorial Hermann with minor leg injuries.”
