Travis Scott Is No Longer Allowed to Perform at Coachella 2022 After Astroworld
The 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is set to begin on April 15, 2022, and will end on April 24, 2022. While Travis Scott was originally supposed to perform at Coachella, new reports allege the rapper is no longer included in the upcoming festival’s lineup.
Travis Scott will no longer perform at Coachella
Astroworld is an annual music festival that is hosted by Scott each year in Houston, Texas. On Nov. 5, the first night of the Astroworld Festival 2021 took place.
During the concert, there was a massive crowd rush, resulting in at least 10 people dying and hundreds being injured. The concert is currently under investigation, and multiple lawsuits have been filed against Live Nation, Scott, and other performers at Astroworld.
On Dec. 11, Variety reported that Scott was “dropped” from the lineup for the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. According to the report, this is because of the controversy surrounding the rapper after Astroworld.
“The development follows a report by KESQ in Palm Springs which reported that the controversial rapper was dropped from the bill following the tragedy which occurred at his own Astroworld festival in November, where 10 people died after the crowd rampaged during his headlining set,” Variety reports.
The report continues, “A Change.org petition was started in the days after the tragedy, demanding his removal from Coachella’s lineup. The petition has gathered nearly 60,000 signatures as of this writing.”
Travis Scott’s team reportedly tried to keep the rapper as a Coachella headliner
Scott was originally set to headline the 2022 Coachella festival along with Rage Against the Machine. According to Variety, the rapper’s team attempted to negotiate with Coachella to allow Scott to remain as a headliner in 2022.
Variety reported:
“Sources say the festival informed Scott’s longtime agent, Cara Lewis of the Cara Lewis Group, of its intent to pull Scott from the bill, which he was to headline, and that it would pay a kill fee for the cancelation, typically 25%. An insider adds that Lewis has been steadfast in trying to keep the slot, which would have marked Scott’s return to the stage after Astroworld, offering to relinquish the performance fee entirely.”
The rapper denied responsibility for the Astroworld incident
Since the Astroworld Festival 2021, Scott has received pushback from media, fans, and the general public for the way he handled the event and for his response to the tragedy.
To combat the negative attention, Scott sat down for an interview with Charlemagne Tha God on YouTube. The interview premiered on Dec. 9. In the interview, Scott claimed he did not know of the casualties at Astroworld until after the concert ended.
During the interview, Scott denied full responsibility for the tragedy, saying, “The media wants to put on me, but at the end of the day… it’s more so about stepping out to figure out what the problem is.”
The 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will take place on April 15-17, 2022, and April 22-24, 2022.
