Trisha Yearwood’s Breakfast Sausage Casserole Is Meaty, Cheesy, and a Make-Ahead Christmas Morning Delight
Trisha Yearwood wants to enjoy Christmas morning with her brood, including husband Garth Brooks, his three daughters, and their extended clan, rather than spend her time standing over a hot stove to get breakfast on the table. Therefore the Food Network star came up with a casserole filled with sausage and is a meaty, cheesy, and most importantly, a make-ahead delight.
This casserole is a Yearwood family favorite
In her book Trisha Yearwood: Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen, Yearwood explained that her family enjoyed this casserole on Christmas morning for many years.
“My dad used to make it Christmas mornings,” said Yearwood as reported by Parade Magazine.
“I put it in the oven on Christmas morning, and it bakes and smells up the house with wonderful aromas while everybody opens presents. By the time the presents are open and everyone’s hungry, it’s time to eat!”
This casserole is one of many Yearwood family recipes that the country singing legend came up with that reflect her father Jack and her mother, Gwen. Both have passed, but Yearwood keeps their memory alive by cooking traditional family recipes, including this casserole.
The ingredient list for Trisha Yearwood’s Breakfast Sausage Casserole
This particular breakfast casserole has two essential criteria when Yearwood looks to get a meal on the table in a flash.
Firstly, it can be made ahead of time.
Secondly, you only need to dirty one bowl and one pan.
The ingredients include butter, white sliced bread, pork sausage, cheddar, half and half, dry mustard, salt, and one beaten egg.
How to put together this easy, delicious and meaty breakfast casserole
Cut bread into cubes and lay them in the bottom of a casserole dish that has been prepared with non-stick spray.
In a large skillet, brown the sausage. Remove from the pan, taking care not to allow too much grease to get into the mixture.
Take the sausage and lay it atop the bread in the pan. Top the meat and bread mixture with cheese.
Add a mixture of half and half, mustard, salt, and eggs. This should be poured evenly over the meat and cheese.
Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.
Bake for almost one hour until lightly browned on top. Then allow the casserole to rest a bit before cutting a big slice for yourself and your family members to enjoy.
