‘Twilight’: Which Cast Member’s Hair Fell out After the First Movie?
Though the Twilight movies may seem magical to fans, filming the five films was a lot of work for the cast and crew. Not only did the actors have to memorize lines, train for stunts, and endure intense weather conditions, but the process of making the actors look like the characters they were hired to portray was often an arduous process. In fact, it wasn’t uncommon for hair and makeup to take hours each and every day.
Of course, diehard Twilight fans likely know about the terrible wig that Taylor Lautner had to wear for the first two movies. The wig was notoriously terrible to work with, often getting caught in Lautner’s mouth and even ruining some takes. But he wasn’t the only person who had to contend with some hair drama while filming.
Nikki Reed’s hair fell out after dyeing it for ‘Twilight’
Nikki Reed, who portrayed Rosalie Hale in the Twilight movies, had a pretty hellacious experience with her hair in the first film. A natural brunette, Reed dyed her hair blonde for Twilight in order to match how her character was described in the eponymous book. However, because Reed’s hair is such a dark brown, the process of lightening it was particularly arduous and actually left her hair severely damaged.
“My hair fell out,” Reed shared with MTV back in 2009, a few months after Twilight premiered. “It took 36 hours initially to make me blond, and every other day, I was bleaching my head and my skin. This time around, we are testing out different wigs and stuff.” Continuing on, Reed shared that wearing wigs was a last resort as she didn’t want to disappoint fans. However, she couldn’t deal with the damage the dying her hair blonde produced.
The cast had to go through an intense hair and makeup process
“I really wanted the fans to understand that I was dedicated, and I was going to do whatever I needed to do, even at the expense of going bald,” the Twilight star continued. “But it was such a brutal process, plus we have a break in between where I have a couple of other projects. And then I go back to Rosalie. So I don’t think I’m bleaching my hair this time. I know how upset everyone is going to be, but [my commitment to portraying Rosalie accurately] is why I did it initially.”
Reed wasn’t the only person who had to dye her natural locks for the Twilight movies. Peter Facinelli (who played Carlisle Cullen) had to dye his black hair blonde. Kellan Lutz, on the other hand, is a natural blonde but had to dye his hair dark brown in order to portray Emmett Cullen. Clearly, being cast in Twilight required many of the actors to change their looks. Fortunately, Reed was able to wear a wig in the later movies so she didn’t have to sacrifice her hair.
