‘Twilight’: Why Kristen Stewart Calls the Wedding Scene ‘Very Cathartic’
Though there are plenty of memorable moments within the five Twilight movies, one that always stands out is the wedding scene. While Twilight may have a lot of fantastical elements, at its core it is a love story. Thus, the marriage of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan was particularly meaningful to fans of the books and the films. Of course, fans weren’t the only ones who found the scene to be emotional. Kristen Stewart was also overwhelmed with feeling while she was shooting the scene.
Stewart, of course, portrayed Bella Swan in the Twilight movies. The first person cast in the film franchise, the actor was very passionate about playing Bella. She was also a big fan of the books, written by Stephenie Meyer, and often used them as a reference point to inform her character choices. One particular part of the books that she read over and over was the wedding scene. So, when it came time to film said scene, she was extremely emotional.
Kristen Stewart was very emotional when she filmed the ‘Twilight’ wedding scene
“It was oddly emotional the first time I got to set and saw everything and everybody,” the Twilight star shared in a 2011 interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I wanted to run down the aisle. I was literally pulling away from Billy [Burke who played Charlie Swan}. Now it’s a trip to watch the wedding scenes especially. It was so volatile and emotional — I was being such a crazy person.”
But why was filming the wedding scene such an emotional experience for Stewart? Naturally, the actor was moved by what a big moment it was for the character that she had portrayed for years. However, another big reason was that the wedding scene marked the very last time that much of the Twilight cast would ever be filming scenes together. Though Stewart and Pattinson would go on to shoot their honeymoon scenes in later months, the rest of the cast, including Taylor Lautner, wrapped that very same day they shot the wedding scene.
The scene was especially memorable for the cast
“Filming the wedding was very cathartic,” Stewart shared with Total Film Magazine in 2012. “I remember sitting in this elaborate wedding dress, wrapped up in a raincoat in a dingy, dirty garage with the whole cast sitting there trying not to be cold, realizing this is probably going to be the last time everybody was there to hang out.”
As filming the Twilight movies was such a large and pivotal chunk of Stewart’s young adulthood, we can understand why completing the project made her emotional. Lautner has shared that his wedding scene was also emotional because not only was his character, Jacob, saying goodbye to Bella, but he was also saying goodbye to Kristen. Fortunately, the actors being overwhelmed with feeling was exactly what the wedding scene called for.
