‘Twilight:’ Robert Pattinson Asked out Kristen Stewart ‘a Lot’ on Set, but She Still Turned Him Down
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart ended up being one of Hollywood’s most talked-about couples when they first got together. But in the beginning, a relationship between the two seemed unlikely. At least for Pattinson. This is because the Spencer star originally rejected Pattinson’s advances.
Kristen Stewart considered Robert Pattinson her first love
Kristen Stewart was once a bit more candid than usual about her relationship with Pattinson. In an interview with Howard Stern, the young actor shared how she really did believe she was in love with The Batman star.
“We were together for years, that was my first [love],” Stewart said according to Entertainment Tonight. “I was super in love with my high school boyfriend. Super f****** in love with him, but me and Rob were a little older and it was just ‘gu gung.’ He’s the best.”
Stern also asked Stewart if she would’ve married Pattinson back then if given the chance.
“I wanted to … yeah, no, I’m not a super-duper traditionalist, but at the same time, every relationship I’ve ever been in, I thought that was it. I’ve never, like, casually [dated] … maybe one or two. I’ve never really been the most casual person,” she added.
Robert Pattinson asked out Kristen Stewart ‘ a lot’ on ‘Twilight’
Pattinson once confided to another party that he was more than just starstruck by Stewart when they met. The president of worldwide marketing for Summit Entertainment, Nancy Kirkpatrick, also worked closely with the cast during the Twilight era. Attending the Forever Twilight in Forks Festival Panel, Kirkpatrick explained how Pattinson once couldn’t help but gush about Stewart.
“Rob and I were flying on a private plane — to a Walmart, of all places — and we’re chatting. He goes, ‘Oh, yeah. I was in love with Kristen from the very first time I saw her in the audition,’” Kirkpatrick recalled according to Fandom.
But he was initially advised against asking out Stewart due to her age.
“[Twilight director Catherine Hardwick] told [Rob], ‘She’s only 17! You’re 21! You can’t, hands off.’ Rob was like, ‘So I had to wait.’ That was a very real relationship,” she continued.
But when Pattinson did decide to make the first move on Stewart, Stewart initially didn’t accept her co-star’s advances.
“Our chemistry was so good I asked her out a lot,” Pattinson once told OK (via Marie Claire.) “But she wasn’t having it.”
Eventually, it seemed that Stewart did decide to give Pattinson a chance, as the two ended up secretly dating. But New Moon director Eric Kops revealed that when they did get together, it was a blessing and a curse.
“You were worried about them as individuals. You knew that they were young stars and this was such a giant thing that exploded. We were very protective of them, always,” Kops said.
Kristen Stewart was warned against apologizing to Robert Pattinson
As many know, Stewart was once caught kissing her Snow White director Rupert Sanders while still dating Pattinson. Kirkpatrick saw firsthand what it did to the celebrity couple.
“[Rob and Kristen] were both heartbroken and devastated,” she said. “It was hard. It was really, really hard.”
Meanwhile, Kops saw just how big the scope of the scandal was.
“At that point, we knew them as colleagues and as a couple, and so in addition to what it was going to mean for the movies, there are two people who have to live their personal lives and figure this out,” he added.
Eventually, Stewart released a public apology for the situation. But it was something neither Kops nor Kirkpatrick were too happy about.
“There were things we wish Kristen would have said, and there’s what Kristen needed to say for Kristen, and at some point, we were like, ‘OK,’” Kops recalled. “You have to do what you think you can live with. So she put out a statement that neither one of us probably would have done, but we both understood this was what she needed to do and so she did it.”
