‘Twilight’: Robert Pattison & Stephenie Meyer Argued When They First Met
As many Twilight fans may already know, Stephenie Meyer never set out to write a bestselling novel. In fact, the author never set out to be a writer at all. However, when she had a vivid dream about a vampire confessing to a human that he loved her but also wanted to kill her in equal parts, the idea simply wouldn’t leave her and she began obsessively writing what would eventually become the first book in The Twilight Saga.
After Meyer’s book had ensnared thousands of readers, talks about making it into a movie began. Though plenty of production studios turned down the opportunity to produce and distribute the film, it eventually found a home at Summit Entertainment. Funnily enough, Summit would grossly underestimate just how popular the movie would eventually become. The studio even considered scrapping the movie completely if Catherine Hardwicke (who directed the first movie in The Twilight Saga) didn’t cut down the film’s budget substantially.
Robert Pattinson took filming ‘Twilight’ very seriously
Even though Twilight was given more of an indie treatment in comparison to its four blockbuster sequels: New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn – Part 1, and Breaking Dawn – Part 2, the cast of the movie still took their roles very seriously. Robert Pattinson, in particular, approached making the movie with a ton of intensity. Determined to make Twilight more than just a cheesy teen romance movie, he treated the film like it was an Oscar contender. In fact, Pattinson refused to talk to his fellow castmates about anything other than the movie for several week’s time.
Pattinson also took the character analysis for his character, Edward Cullen, very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that he was willing to argue with Meyer about Edward’s feelings, beliefs, and motivations. In a 2012 interview with Collider, The Batman star recalled meeting the bestselling author for the very first time.
Pattinson and Stephenie Meyer argued the first time they met
“I remember meeting [Meyer] the first time and arguing with [her] tons,” Pattinson revealed. Meyer also recalled the meeting and consigned the actor’s claims. “He sat there and argued with me about what Edward thinks and feels,” Meyer remembered. “It was amazing! It was awesome!” And filming Twilight certainly wasn’t the last time Pattinson would argue with people about Edward’s feelings, behavior, thoughts, or motivations. He was constantly willing to go up to bat for how he perceived his extremely popular character.
“After you’ve done three movies, you get to a point where there’s a distinctive understanding of it, so you don’t really know where you end and the character begins, after awhile,” Pattinson revealed about filming the Twilight Saga. “There are certain things where you don’t know if it’s you thinking. I’ve spent so much time in Vancouver that I’m just like, ‘Edward wouldn’t do that,’ but if someone asks you why, you don’t know why. You’re just like, ‘Cause I wouldn’t do it.'”
The ‘Twilight’ cast member felt very strongly about his character, Edward Cullen
Clearly, Pattinson felt strongly about the inner workings of his character’s mind if he was willing to argue with the person who created Edward about it. Still, it’s great that he felt so empowered as an artist that he felt the need to fight for his interpretation of the infamous Twilight character.
