Tyla Sizzles in Shredded Dress, Sets the Record Straight With Her 1st MTV Video Music Award
Tyla stood out for several reasons at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards last night. The South African singer won Best Afrobeats at the annual event. She expressed gratitude for the recognition while respectfully defining the meaning of Afrobeats. Tyla exemplified grace and eloquence while catching every eye with her gorgeous shredded dress. Later, she chose another deconstructed look for a VMA afterparty.
Tyla wins Best Afrobeats at the VMAs
Tyla asked Lil Nas X to hold her Moonman award, playfully saying, “I’m not strong enough,” as she accepted her award. Then, the 22-year-old explained how winning to Best Afrobeats for “Water” was “special but also bittersweet.” Tyla explained, as she posted on Instagram, “The global impact that ‘Water’ has had on the world just proves that African music can be pop music, too.”
The “Jump” singer” clarified to the audience, “I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats… Even though Afrobeats has run things and opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats.” Tyla alluded to controversy over African artists distancing their work from the Afrobeats genre, adding, “I come from South Africa, and I represent amapiano and my culture.”
As Tyla gave her thoughtful speech, the Johannesburg native shined bright in a gorgeous Area fall/winter 2024 runway look. The dandelion yellow emphasized the “One Call” singer’s glowing skin and toned physique, perfectly complementing the turquoise collar necklace set around her decollete. She wore hot pink heels on her feet and styled her hair in voluminous wavy curls lightly highlighted.
Tyla celebrates with Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter
After Tyla recovered from the exciting moment onstage, she celebrated her win with an appearance at Electric Lady Studios for a late-night MTV VMAs afterparty. This particular recording studio, located in Greenwich Village, was founded by rocker Jimi Hendrix in 1968, reports WSDG. Electric Lady Studios is one of the world’s first artist-owned recording studios and one of the oldest, most successful studios ever — certainly an ideal place for music superstars to gather.
Tyla pulled off a wardrobe change between events. She donned another shredded look, this time with remnants of distressed denim scattered over her chest, waist, and legs. Tyla was in good company at the late-night fête. Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Post Malone, and Suki Waterhouse also attended.
