The second season of The Umbrella Academy premieres on July 31, but fans are already thinking about season three. When the Netflix series made its debut back in February 2019, viewers quickly consumed all 10 episodes. Now, everyone is prepared to do the same when the clock strikes midnight. But is The Umbrella Academy Season 3 coming to the streaming platform? Recently, TUA cast members Tom Hopper (Luther) and Robert Sheehan (Klaus) revealed they’re hoping to return for another season.

As of this write-up, Netflix has yet to renew The Umbrella Academy Season 3. In July 2020, a source told We Got This Covered the show will receive at least three seasons. But the streaming platform hasn’t made an official announcement.

That said, it’s likely Netflix will reveal the status of The Umbrella Academy Season 3 shortly after the second season is released. As mentioned, the first season dropped in February 2019. Then the streaming platform announced the second season renewal two months later.

Meanwhile, there’s plenty of source material for The Umbrella Academy series to work with moving forward. The show is based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comics, which just released its third volume, Hotel Oblivion

Then in an interview with Collider published in March 2019, Way revealed there will be eight graphic novels in the series. He also shared the details with The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman.

“What I did for Steve Blackman and the writers in that first writers room was to create an eighteen-page document that laid everything out. Even of the graphic novels that haven’t come out yet. Which should equal eight when we’re all done,” Way said. “So I gave them the blueprint for what happens, because you do want to seed certain things in there for future series and the hope is that it’s a success so that you do a lot more of these.”

He added, “They’re very curious what Gabriel and I are doing next. We always send them the new comics. They really want to know what’s happening.”

Tom Hopper and Robert Sheehan are confident in ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3

Now, viewers must patiently wait for Netflix to make an announcement about The Umbrella Academy Season 3. But it appears members of the show’s cast are already confident in a third season.

“The show is very very popular, so we’re optimistic,” Sheehan said during an interview with RadioTimes.com. “We’d love to keep the engines rolling.”

Then when speaking with Tech Radar, Sheehan echoed his comments about coming back for another round. Meanwhile, Hopper agreed. He also teased the third season of Umbrella Academy would explore new depths beyond the source material if it’s renewed.

“It’s quite a gift to have the kind of show we have, because we have a showrunner who’s very collaborative,” Hopper said. “It’s great to have that source material to influence where we could go, and what we could do. As you’ve seen from the first two seasons, there are influences from the comic. But it also allows us to deviate from that structure.”

He continued, “And I love seeing where Steve Blackman’s mind can go, past the comics … He has an amazing ability to put us all through hell and back in a very unique way. I’d love to go back and do a bunch more of these.”

Then both Sheehan and Hopper suggested they’ve spoken to The Umbrella Academy showrunner about season three.

“You’re always talking about future seasons,” Hopper said. “From season one, you’re always talking about where the show could go. So yeah, there are always conversations happening about future seasons.”

Sheehan added, “I’m always hatching pipe dreams and sending emails to Steve. That’s the fun part.”

Whether or not The Umbrella Academy Season 3 comes to Netflix in the future, it looks like the second season will end with another major cliffhanger.

“The way the season ends, I think there’s so many avenues there,” Hopper said in the above interview with RadioTimes.com.

The actor also hinted the third season could potentially introduce new characters and a new setting.

“There’s a whole host of new characters potentially, and new relationships, and a whole new world again,” Hopper said. “That’s what I love about each season. It puts us into a whole new world and presses the reset button again, rather than just carrying on where we left off.”
