Was ‘Untold: Caitlyn Jenner’ Part of Her Run for California Governor?
Caitlyn Jenner is known to pop culture fans of all ages and generations for a wide variety of different things. Jenner, who first burst onto the screen in the ’70s thanks to her incredible performance in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, has successfully managed to reinvent herself over the years as a motivational speaker, business leader, reality television star, and finally, an icon for the transgender community. Most recently, Caitlyn Jenner launched a high-profile political campaign, running for governor of California. While Jenner’s campaign was ultimately unsuccessful, some fans have wondered if a new Netflix special could have been one of Jenner’s ways of highlighting her political advantages.
Jenner is a former Olympic athlete and reality television star
Caitlyn Jenner was born in 1949 and got her start in athletics playing football. After a knee surgery that sidelined her football career, Jenner was persuaded to try the decathlon. Jenner excelled at the challenging sport and quickly progressed, eventually competing and winning the men’s decathlon event at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. After immediately rising to fame as an all-American athlete, Jenner landed multiple endorsement deals and business opportunities, becoming a recognizable face to sports fans all around the world.
In 2007, Jenner was introduced to a new generation when she began appearing with her family in the reality television show Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Jenner was a central presence on the show until 2015, when she took a very public step back after her divorce from Kris Jenner to focus on her gender transition and work on some new ventures. At that point, Jenner still appeared on the reality show, although more sporadically.
Caitlyn Jenner recently ran for governor of California
In recent years, Caitlyn Jenner has appeared in a variety of reality shows, including her own documentary series, I Am Cait. She has also become very outspoken about various political issues — and ultimately, in the spring of 2021, Jenner announced her decision to run for governor of California in an attempt to displace current California Governor Gavin Newsom.
An outspoken conservative, Jenner has received criticism from some fans in the past for her views. At the announcement, Jenner received a number of negative comments, many from members of the LGBTQ+ community who didn’t think that Jenner was the best choice to represent the community in any large-scale political operation. Notably, none of the Kardashian-Jenners spoke out publicly regarding Jenner’s run for governor, leading some to believe that the family didn’t support the idea.
Was Caitlyn Jenner’s new ‘Untold’ project part of her political campaign?
In mid-August, Netflix dropped a teaser trailer for a brand-new docuseries focusing on Caitlyn Jenner. The special, titled Untold: Caitlyn Jenner, promised viewers an intimate look at Jenner’s life and career prior to her public transition, with a special focus on her athletic accomplishments.
The timing of the special couldn’t have been more specific, with Jenner’s high-profile run for governor in full swing. The docuseries special would have given viewers who might only know Jenner from Keeping Up With the Kardashians a chance to see her life well before the reality stardom, and remind longtime fans of Jenner’s incredible athletic prowess.
Ultimately, Jenner’s bid for the office of California governor failed, with Gavin Newsom beating the attempt to remove him from office. As reported by MSN, Jenner isn’t too bitter about the way it turned out, however, revealing on The View that the campaign was “one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.” She also admitted that she wants to stay involved in politics, and wouldn’t rule out another run in the future.
