‘Venom’ Tom Hardy Says ‘We Have to Put Grendel in Venom 3!’
Actors, directors, and writers research their source material. When it comes to comics, digging through decades and decades of comics can pose a challenge. The Venom 2 director Andy Serkis and actor Tom Hardy were quizzed over their knowledge of Marvel symbiotes, revealing new characters that might have planted ideas in Hardy’s head for Venom 3.
Symbiote or Death Metal Band? The quiz game that interested Tom Hardy for ‘Venom 3’
In a video from IGN’s YouTube Channel, host Francesca Rivera challenged the director and actor duo’s knowledge. Noticing the similarity between Marvel symbiote and Death Metal band names, she tested their knowledge.
Mentioning names like Scorn and Lasher, Serkis and Hardy answered most correctly. Only a few stumped them, like the symbiote Mania.
For the last name, Rivera mentioned Grendel. This last test confused both Serkis and Hardy as they checked to see if the other knew the answer.
“That’s 100% a body part; that’s a trick question!” Hardy laughed. “I know what the ‘Grendel’ is. It’s a band.” However, he lacked confidence in his answer.
Rivera revealed Grendel as the monstrous dragon-symbiote. Neither gues had heard of the creature, prompting Hardy to exclaim, “We have to put Grendel in Venom 3, somewhere!”
How could Grendel appear in the third ‘Venom’?
The Grendel would prove a complicated character to cameo in Venom 3. The mere existence of it poses massive implications.
The dragon was created by Knull, who also made the race of symbiotes, called Klyntars in the comics. The beastly Grendel rampaged across the cosmos before being defeated by Thor and trapped in ice for centuries.
Of course, Grendel managed to break free in the modern day to cause havoc for Spider-Man and Venom.
Even after it was defeated, pieces of the Grendel symbiote merged with Venom, Carnage, and others, creating even more beastly versions of the characters.
Such a colossal villain might prove difficult to simply cameo, but perhaps a name drop hinting at problems down the line beyond Venom 3 could get fans excited.
‘Venom 3’ will likely incorporate the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Ever since Sony’s Venom appeared on release slates, fans have questioned how Venom could crossover with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
Several outlets report that may turn into reality.
A crossover of the magnitude might prove a bit too big to incorporate a massive symbiote-dragon like Grendel.
However, Hardy reacted excitedly to hearing about the Grendel. The tight working relationship between Serkis and Hardy, it easily could also turn into reality for Venom 3.
And the actor already admitted that he had ideas for Venom 3.
Marvel has a deep pool of far-out characters. As the studios dip into more and more obscure titles, like The Eternals, no character truly lies outside the realm of possibility.
While Hardy might have meant the line as a joke, his curiosity piqued. As Sony’s universe expands to incorporate Kraven the Hunter and Morbius, more symbiotes and obscure Spider-Man villains, however unlikely, could make the jump to the big screen.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2021.
