Venus Williams also withdrew from the Grand Slam following her sister’s announcement

Shortly after Serena’s injury announcement, Venus posted a video to her Twitter account, per Entertainment Tonight where she too revealed she was suffering from an injury and would not be competing. In the video, which you can watch above, she told viewers,  “Not the best news from Serena and I today.” Adding, “I too am unable to play the U.S. Open. It’s super, super, super, super disappointing. I’m having. some issues with my leg all this summer and just couldn’t work through it. Tried my best here in Chicago, but I just was unable to figure out the equation and there have been so many times where I’ve been able to figure it out. Even not in the best of my health, but this time around I just couldn’t make any miracles work.” She continued to say. that she was going to miss not being part of the US Open as it is her favorite Grand Slam to compete in and be involved.

Does this mean Venus Williams is retiring?

While disappointed, this injury will not stop Venus from trying to compete next year. Along with the video she wrote in her caption, “It’s still going to be a great US Open & many thanks to the @usta for the wild card. I was so looking forward to it, but it was not meant to be this year. I will be back.”
