Video of King Charles ‘Ignoring’ Princess Diana at Royal Events Before She Gets Her ‘Revenge’
Royal fans know that then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana didn’t have a very happy marriage. After tying the knot in 1981, the two separated in 1992. And two years later a documentary aired in which Charles admitted to cheating on his wife with his mistress, known at the time as Camilla Parker Bowles.
After that, what was dubbed the “War of the Waleses” really picked up as Charles and Diana tried to outdo each other on different occasions. But for the princess all it took was one dress that will forever be remembered in history.
A video making the rounds on social media is putting Diana’s “revenge dress” back in the spotlight. And while fans have seen the princess’s famous black dress countless times, some aren’t aware of the story behind why she chose to wear it when she did.
Video shows clips before Princess Diana wore the ‘revenge dress’
The 25-second video, posted to TikTok on July 16, starts off with clips of Charles and Diana attending events together. The text reads: “Charles ignores Diana at events.”
The video then cuts to a shot of the current king‘s face during that Charles: The Private Man, the Public Role documentary as he confesses to being unfaithful in his marriage to the princess with the text: “Then confesses to cheating on TV.”
Next, the video cuts to Diana and then some newspapers with headlines about her husband’s infidelity. The video’s text reads, “While Diana was in public … people expected her to hide” before a clip of the princess stepping out of a car in the revenge dress with the words: “She didn’t.”
The final seconds of the video show the late Princess of Wales beaming as she greets and shakes hands with a few people.
The TikTok video has racked up thousands of views along with hundreds of likes.
The story behind Diana’s little black revenge dress
So what is the real story behind Diana’s iconic dress and her decision to wear it? Well, as the video shows, she did wear it following Charles’ admission that he had an extramarital affair with Camilla.
The date was June 29, 1994, and the event where Diana rocked that unforgettable dress was a party hosted by Vanity Fair for the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens. The LBD was an off-the-shoulder, form-fitting, ruched, silk and chiffon design by Christina Stambolian. To go with her gown, the princess rocked a statement pearl-and-sapphire choker with her favorite Manolo Blahnik heels and carried a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch.
Diana’s look made headlines and quite a few hearts race.
Kerry Taylor, whose company auctioned off 10 of Diana’s outfits, explained how the princess’s dress got its name.
“We called that ‘The Revenge Dress’ [because] she wore that the same evening Prince Charles confessed to his adultery with Camilla,” Taylor told Woman magazine (per Readers Digest). “While some would have been like, ‘I can’t face it this evening,’ Diana went out in that dress looking drop-dead gorgeous. She made a big statement right there.”
