Ragnar becomes the Earl of Kattegat while married to his wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick). But she has a miscarriage, and Ragnar starts wondering why will give him the sons he was promised by the Seer (John Kavanagh). While away on business for King Horik (Donal Logue), Ragnar meets Aslaug, a princess from Götaland, and he cheats on his wife with her and gets her pregnant. She even tells him that she’s pregnant before they part ways, and Aslaug comes calling months later while heavily pregnant.

Ragnar suggests that he marry Aslaug as well and have two wives, but his wife isn’t having it. She chooses to divorce Ragnar when he tells her to “accept” Aslaug. Now that she’s out of the way, Aslaug is free to marry Ragnar, and she ends up having four sons of his: Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar.

‘Vikings’: What Were Ragnar Lothbrok’s Last Words?

The two form a family with their sons, and everything seems to be right between them, at least for the first few years. When Ragnar becomes King of Kattegat, Aslaug becomes the Queen. Despite the happily wedded bliss, Aslaug thinks Ragnar wants to sleep with other women, and she is jealous of him even looking at another woman. Ragnar loses interest in his wife over time, and she feels neglected. Consequently, she sleeps with Harbard (Kevin Durand), a wanderer who comes to Kattegat. Ragnar cheats as well, proving how far their marriage fails.

By season 4A episode 4, she’s fully aware that the marriage is no longer happy, purchasing an attractive woman named Yidu (Dianne Doan) as a servant knowing full well that she will catch Ragnar’s gaze. It’s what she’s hoping for, since she wants to keep Ragnar complacent with another woman so she can be left alone.

Aslaug even asks if her husband wants to “spend some time with her,” saying she “can arrange it.” Ragnar does eventually form an attachment to Yidu, having sexual relations with her.

The moment that proves Aslaug wanted to rule alone

In season 4A, episode 1, Aslaug goes to find the Seer, who is collecting mushrooms. She straight-up asks him if a woman will be Queen of Kattegat after Ragnar’s death, asking if it will be her even. This proves she wants to rule alone without Ragnar. Why else would she ask the person who can supposedly see the future that question?

She clearly wants to be the Queen of Kattegat without Ragnar’s influence, and she’s wondering if she will once Ragnar dies as he’s hurt at the time from battle in the raid on Paris.

“What do you want?” The Seer asks.

“I want to know if a woman will succeed to the kingdom of Kattegat,” Aslaug says.

“You mean after the death of Ragnar?” he asks her.

“Yes,” she clarifies.

He tells her it’s “unwise to imagine the death of kings,” but Aslaug still wants to know. “Yes, I have seen it. A woman will one day rule in Kattegat,” he says.

“Will it be me?” she asks, but the Seer doesn’t answer and just laughs, not answering her. “You know the truth but you will not say,” Aslaug says.

“I have already said enough,” the Seer answers, ending the conversation when he presents his hand, which she licks, as is the custom after talking with the Seer.

However, it won’t be her, but Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), Ragnar’s first wife whom he cheated on, who becomes the official Queen of Kattegat. Although Aslaug rules as Queen for years while Ragnar is away when he abandons his people, she’s never declared the sole ruler in charge. Lagertha actually kills Aslaug years later, usurping Kattegat once Ragnar returns and goes to Wessex.

Aslaug wanted to be Queen by herself, and she gets a taste of it for a few years, but she’s never the sole ruler like she always wanted.
