Ragnar Lothbrok in ‘Vikings’

Ragnar is a farmer who makes a journey west, finding England and changing everything for his people. He becomes the Earl of Kattegat, and over time, he becomes the King. His legend grows raiding England, and he’s given land in Wessex by King Ecbert (Linus Roache), where some of his people settle, as he’s always wanted.

He even raids Paris in a successful attempt. But the second attempt is a failure, and he goes up against his brother who betrayed him, Rollo (Clive Stanten), returning to Kattegat in disgrace. He chooses to leave for many years, but he eventually returns, developing a plan that involves his murder in England. It prompts his sons to seek revenge, which is what he wanted all along for the settlement in Wessex, which was destroyed. His legend looms large even after his death, and over the seasons there are many important and critical moments in his life.

Fans reveal their ‘favorite Ragnar moment of all time’

Two years ago, a fan wrote a post on Reddit saying, “[SPOILERS] What is your favorite Ragnar moment of all time?” They continue, mentioning Ragnar’s goodbye to his best friend, Athelstan (George Blagden) after he’s killed by Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård).

“For me it’s too hard to choose, but if I had to pick, I think I’d go with the scene where Ragnar goes out in the woods after Athelstan’s death and starts talking to him as if he’s there. That scene is just so powerful to me. The acting is crazy and it was just so emotional, and I really felt his pain. What do you guys think?”

Fans weighed in with their own thoughts about their favorite moments involving the popular character. One fan recalls the last episode that Ragnar is in, in which he’s beaten and eventually killed by King Aelle (Ivan Kaye). A fan mentions Ragnar’s “entire reflection on life.”

“His entire reflection on life and death in his final episode is heartbreaking,” they said. “Very well acted and directed.”

Ragnar once saw his old life

Another fan mentions a moment when Ragnar sees his old life, including his ex-wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), along with Athelstan, and Ragnar’s two children, Bjorn (Nathan O’Toole) and Gyda (Ruby O’Leary) on their old farm.

“That scene in Paris when he looks to shore and hallucinates Athelstan, young Bjorn, Lagertha and Gyda,” they said. “Gets me every time.”
