‘Vikings’: How Do Fans Really Feel About Queen Aslaug?
Vikings is full of interesting characters that have made appearances throughout the years. Queen Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) is one of them who left an impression on viewers. So, how do fans really feel about Queen Aslaug? Read on to find out. There are spoilers ahead.
Who is Queen Aslaug?
Aslaug is the second wife of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel). She has four sons with him who go on to leave their own marks on the Viking world. In season 1, Ragnar meets Aslaug, who is a Götaland Princess. Ragnar ends up cheating on his wife Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) with Aslaug, who ends up pregnant.
Aslaug shows up in Kattegat many months later and heavily pregnant. Ragnar refuses to make her leave and instead accepts her into his home. Lagertha divorces him and leaves, and Aslaug swoops in. She gives birth to four sons and becomes Queen of Kattegat when Ragnar becomes the King. Many years later, Lagertha gets her revenge on Aslaug when she takes back Kattegat and kills Aslaug.
How do fans feel about Queen Aslaug?
Aslaug is definitely seen as a villain by many fans. She knew what she was doing because it’s spoken about in the series that she has visions, so she knew things ahead of time. Over the years, she becomes nasty and vindictive. She stops caring for her children (except for Ivar) and desires to rule by herself without Ragnar. She even asks the Seer if she will be Queen of Kattegat after Ragnar dies.
“I never liked her as a character,” a Reddit user wrote. “Lagertha handled her arrival very gracefully but Aslaug was just so smug. She caused Lagertha to leave Ragnar which in my opinion has been the most devastating part of the show so far.”
Did she get what she deserved?
Some fans didn’t think Aslaug deserved to die the way she did. “Didn’t particularly like her but she didn’t deserve to die like that especially after surrendering peacefully,” another Reddit user said.
Others think she got what she deserved in the end after separating Lagertha and Ragnar. “She knew Ragnar was married before she ever hooked up with him, she deserved whatever Lagertha felt like dishing out! I’m surprised she didn’t see it coming since she had the gift of sight,” a Reddit user explained.
Many viewers seem to blame Aslaug for ruining things between Lagertha and Ragnar in the end. “I always thought of her as a strong and smart woman, so I did have respect for her,” a Reddit user began. “But I also found her really annoying sometimes, and she messed with Lagertha and Ragnar’s relationship, which to me is always been the best couple of the series.”
Aslaug chose to save Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) when Ragnar left him in the woods to die. Fans are conflicted about whether or not Aslaug is responsible for what Ivar would go on to do. He kills many people and proclaims himself a god to be worshiped. Many believe she made the right choice to save him since he is her son after all and she loved him very much.
Queen Aslaug was definitely a unique character on Vikings. While some fans do have sympathy for her, many don’t like her for a number of reasons.
