In the series Vikings, Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) were once married. They were together when the series started, but they divorced when Lagertha left Ragnar after he got another woman pregnant and wouldn’t turn her away. Despite the serious situation, they still cared for one another, which is evident in their final conversation on camera in the series.

Ragnar was obsessed with a prophecy told to him by the Seer (John Kavanagh) that he would have “many sons,” something he was quick to prove. His wife, Lagertha, had a miscarriage, and Ragnar eventually cheated with another woman named Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland), who comes calling while heavily pregnant.

Ragnar tells Lagertha that she “must accept” Aslaug. That prompts Lagertha to leave, divorcing her husband, who is extremely sorrowful to see her and his son, Bjorn (Nathan O’Toole), leave.

They reunite years later, and again Ragnar doesn’t want his former wife to leave Kattegat, but she does, and she carves out a life for herself in Hedeby as its Earl. She even helps Ragnar get Kattegat back when it’s usurped and raids with him as well.

After many years pass, Ragnar, now the King, is defeated at Paris with the help of his brother, Rollo (Clive Standen). Ragnar then decides to leave his life behind for a long time, but he eventually returns to Kattegat. No one is happy to see him years later, as he abandoned them, and they’ve recently learned about the destroyed Viking settlement in Wessex that Ragnar knew about.

He asks his sons to go with him as well as his friend, Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård), but everyone has other plans. He even manages to have a reunion with Lagertha, going to see her in Hedeby one final time in season 4B, episode 1. But first, he’s introduced to Astrid (Josefin Asplund), Lagertha’s companion and lover.

“It’s been a long time Ragnar,” Lagertha says to her ex-husband when she enters the room while holding an owl. Ragnar pours her a drink, and Lagertha asks why he left Kattegat, to which Ragnar bluntly replies, “I was no longer interested in ruling anymore.”

Lagertha tells him that he was still king and had a “duty,” eventually telling Astrid she needs to go, and the two former lovers talk privately.

This 1 moment between Ragnar and Lagertha proves their feelings for each other

Once they’re alone, Lagertha brings up the settlement and the fact that Ragnar failed to mention its “destruction.”

“I regret what happened with the settlement,” Ragnar says. “And I regret what happened between us. I have made many bad choices.” But Lagertha reminds him that they “all approved” of his ideas.

Ragnar goes on to say that he wishes he’d never left the farm that he shared with Lagertha. “Forgive me for all of my faults, all of my failings,” Ragnar says to his ex-wife.

Ragnar still has feelings for Lagertha after some much time apart. She obviously also has feelings for him too after everything they’ve been through. They had two children together and spent a lot of years as husband and wife. Over the course of the series, it’s obvious these two still have an undeniable bond that hasn’t dulled with their divorce. The love they share is still there, and it’s clear it always will be.

As he gets up to leave and Lagertha does the same, they each say, “No regrets.” Then Ragnar kisses Lagertha on the cheek, but she stops him from leaving and kisses him in a long, passionate kiss. The moment proves that the two still care for one another and love each other.

Lagertha chooses not to go with him back to Wessex, and Ragnar leaves Hedeby, never seeing her alive again. Ragnar and his son, Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen), head to Wessex, where Ragnar finally gets his revenge for the settlement through his death. It prompts his sons to come over to England to get revenge once Ivar returns home to tell the story of Ragnar’s demise.

His final conversation with Lagertha holds a special moment between them where they kiss, proving their feelings for one another after so many years apart.
