In the beginning of the season, Bjorn is King of Kattegat and he chooses to let men go free into the woods. These aren’t just any men though, they are Ivar’s (Alex Høgh Andersen) former men that committed terrible crimes for him.

The bandits come back with a vengeance and they lead directly to the deaths of people closest to Bjorn. First his son Hali is killed by the bandit leader, then his mother Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) is almost killed by the leader when they return. Luckily, Lagertha kills him, but she suffers serious wounds from it.

Lagertha then travels alone back to Kattegat where she meets Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) who thinks she is Ivar. He stabs Lagertha to death. The loss is profound for literally everyone. Somehow, Bjorn realizes who killed his mother, and he acts like he’s going to kill Hvitserk for what he did to Lagertha.

Bjorn Ironside seeks revenge

Bjorn says he’s going to have Hvitserk burned alive, and as the pyre is lit, Hvitserk looks up to the sky and Bjorn makes a choice. He motions to Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) to throw an ax and cut Hvitserk free. Bjorn allows him to live, but he’s banished forever.

The decision will certainly come back to bite Bjorn in the worst way. According to a new promo trailer for episode 9, Hvitserk is going to reunite with Ivar in Kiev possibly. It looks like Ivar and Hvitserk could team up against Bjorn along with the rest of the Rus Vikings.

Why the choice to let Hvitserk live could be Bjorn’s worst one yet

Bjorn has been making some pretty poor choices this season. He let the bandits go free, which leads to the direct death of his son. It also helps lead things along with Lagertha’s death at the hands of his brother. However, the choice to let Hvitserk live and go free could be Bjorn’s biggest mistake.

Hvitserk can now share critical information with Ivar and the Rus Vikings. He knows where Bjorn’s head is at and it may now be easier for them to team up against Bjorn and take back Kattegat. Bjorn should have killed Hvitserk for what he did, but instead, he’s let his enemy go free to join his brother.

One thing is certain: The Rus are coming and Ivar with them. If Hvitserk has also joined them, it will be another brother’s war. This could lead to the destruction of Kattegat and everything Bjorn still cares about. He may choose to leave and renounce his claim in order to avoid more loss of life. Everything for Bjorn could seriously change and it’s looking worse for him if Hvitserk has joined the Rus.

Bjorn Ironside should never have let Hvitserk go free. It could be the worst decision he’s ever made.
