‘Vikings’ Season 6: Why Some Viewers Can’t Understand Torvi’s Choice
There have been quite a few times that the main characters of Vikings have made choices that have made us scratch our heads in confusion. This week, Torvi (Georgia Hirst) tries to make a choice that could have changed the course of the series forever. Read on to learn what happened. With the death of a legend comes sacrifices
Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) was killed by Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) in episode 6 in a shocking turn of events. Episode 7 is all about mourning Lagertha and her lavish funeral. With such a ceremony, of course there’s bound to be a human sacrifice to go along with it. Numerous people volunteer to die, but Torvi volunteering seriously left us all at home confused and shocked. Luckily, Gunnhild (Ragga Ragnars) refuses Torvi’s request considering she has a family and is also pregnant.
What fans are saying about Torvi
Fans aren’t exactly thrilled with Torvi willing to sacrifice herself while she’s pregnant with a daughter and a husband who need her. Did she really think they would let her sacrifice herself?
“My wife laughed when she offered herself up. She was like ‘you dishonest *****, you knew they would never have allowed a pregnant woman to be sacrificed,’” a Reddit user explained.
Viewers aren’t happy
Many viewers are upset at the thought of Torvi dying to go be with Lagertha in Valhalla. She still has so much to live for in the present.
“The thing that bugged me was Torvi wanting to sacrifice herself,” another Reddit user said. “Yeah, just let me die and leave not only my one living child without her mother, but also let me go ahead and kill my unborn kid too. When she said she wanted to die, I was like aren’t you freaking pregnant?”
Some think she grieves more for Lagertha than her son
Others find it strange that Torvi appears to grieve more for Lagertha than the death of her own son at the hands of the bandit leader.
“I consider it bad writing for Torvi to spend three seconds grieving for Hali and then the entire rest of the episode for Lagertha to the point of being willing to leave behind Ubbe and her daughter that had just lost her brother and grandmother by sacrificing herself,” another user wrote.
Torvi and Lagertha had a deep bond
Torvi and Lagertha became very close over the years. Their loyalty towards one another knew no bounds and it makes sense that one would grieve for the other. It can be argued that Torvi is just as sad about the loss of her son as she is about Lagertha, though she seems to show her love for Lagertha more in the latest episode.
The funeral preparations honor the most famous shield-maiden to ever live. What doesn’t make sense is Torvi’s willingness to die and leave a family that obviously needs her. Thankfully, Gunnhild shoots that whole things down and Torvi will live to see another day. Hopefully she can redeem herself in the eyes of fans who are still a little upset at the thought of her dying.
