Bjorn Ironside has come a long way
When fans first meet Bjorn, he is just a child on Ragnar and Lagertha’s (Katheryn Winnick) family farm. He witnesses his father rise to greatness as he travels West and finds England. However, it leads to challenges between Ragnar and the local earl, Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne). Ragnar wins in single combat against him and is declared the Earl of Kattegat.
Bjorn’s father continues sailing west and creates more of a legend of himself. But when he cheats on Bjorn’s mother, Lagertha, and gets Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) pregnant, Lagertha leaves him and her life in Kattegat. At the last moment, Bjorn decides to go with his mother, although he does see his father again years later when they come to assist him in getting Kattegat back from Jarl Borg (Thorbjørn Harr).
Ragnar is eventually made the King of Kattegat after killing King Horik when he was plotting to have him killed first. Bjorn lives with his father for many years, and he raids and fights with him as well. It’s his father who gives him the name of Ironside, and he eventually makes a name for himself not just as Ragnar’s son, but as a fierce fighter and world traveler. Through raids in Paris and in England, Bjorn becomes quite famous like his father.
Bjorn and his brothers get revenge for Ragnar Lothbrok’s death
Bjorn makes it all the way to the Mediterranean, but he returns when he realizes his father has been killed. Together with The Great Heathen Army, Bjorn and the Vikings wage war on England and get revenge for the death of Ragnar. Bjorn’s father was killed by King Aelle (Ivan Kaye) after King Ecbert (Linus Roache) handed him over (at Ragnar’s insistence).
Peace doesn’t last long in Vikings, and Lagertha’s kingdom of Kattegat is taken over by Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen), Bjorn’s brother, after she takes it from Aslaug, his mother. Eventually, Bjorn fights to get Kattegat back from his brother. He becomes the King of Kattegat, but it couldn’t have come at a worst time.
Ivar allies himself with the Rus, and with Prince Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky) at the helm, they invade Scandinavia. During the fighting, Bjorn is stabbed on the beach by what appears to be Ivar (even though he’s supposed to be somewhere else entirely at the time).
Alexander Ludwig posts a tribute to the series
Bjorn’s full fate isn’t yet known until season 6B, which is the final season of the series. On the day it premiered, December 30, Ludwig, who plays Bjorn, posted an epic tribute to the show on Instagram. He included a number of photos and shared a sentimental message in honor of the series.
The first image shared is Bjorn riding out on his horse after being shot with a few arrows. He holds up the Sword of Kings looking hurt. The next photo is of a young Bjorn from season 1 with the opposite image being a fully grown Bjorn from season 6. The third photo shows Bjorn holding up his sword, and in the last image, we see the iconic poster for the final episodes with the remaining sons of Ragnar.
Ludwig captioned the post on Instagram: “This is it. The final season is now streaming on Prime Video. So proud of our incredible cast and crew. Thank you to everyone who has supported us on this incredible journey. It has been the greatest honor of my life working on this show. See you in Valhalla 😉 @amazonprimevideo #vikings @historyvikings.”
What happens to Bjorn in season 6B?
Bjorn survives, but not for long. When season 6B picks back up, he’s been taken back to Kattegat, and he’s gravely wounded. However, he has King Hakon (Mishaël Lopes Cardozo) spread a rumor to the Rus that Bjorn has already died. Although Hakon is killed, the plan works, and when Bjorn rides out to meet the Rus, everyone is shocked he’s still alive. It scares them, and when Ganbaatar (Andrei Claude), a captain in Oleg’s army, shoots Bjorn with three arrows, he’s miraculously still alive through it all. He unsheathes the Sword of Kings, and the rest of his forces surround the Rus. They fight, and the Rus retreat back to Kyiv when the Vikings win the battle.
Bjorn’s plan works, and he saves his country. Unfortunately, he doesn’t survive, and he’s given a lavish burial. Bjorn went out sacrificing himself for his people, and he will always be remembered for that. The series is over and Bjorn’s journey has come full circle.
