Who is Helga?

Helga is Floki’s companion as early as season 1. They work well together and seem to bring out the best in one another. Helga and Floki allow Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his family to stay with them after their home is destroyed by Earl Haraldson’s (Gabriel Byrne) men. After that, the relationship between the Lothbroks and Floki and Helga is a sincerely close one.

Helga herself seems to be friendly with everyone. She’s almost always smiling, and she is usually positive about most situations. She even encourages Floki to get back into Ragnar’s good graces after their falling out.

In season 2, Helga and Floki get married and have a child named Angrboda, but she dies in season 4, which is a devastating blow for them both. However, Helga wants another child eventually, but Floki refuses.

Helga takes a girl from a seaport

In season 4B, Floki and Helga go with Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig), Ragnar’s first son, on his quest to get to the Mediterranean Sea. On their way there, they stop at a seaport in what’s now a part of Spain, and Helga finds a girl named Tanaruz (Sinead Gormally) there whose mother is killed by King Harald (Peter Franzén) and her father is killed by Harald’s brother, Halfdan (Jasper Pääkkönen). Helga abducts the girl, who is a young teenager, and takes her with them against her will. Even though Floki tries to persuade Helga not to abduct the girl from her home, she does anyways.

Tanaruz is forced to go with them back to Kattegat, and eventually on a raid on England when the Great Heathen Army comes over on their longships after the death of Ragnar by the kings of England. During the attack at Winchester, Tanaruz stabs Helga with a knife, and then kills herself. Floki finds Helga as she’s dying, and she tells him, “You’re not like anybody else. Be yourself, Floki. This world. It is too small for you.” Helga dies in the finale of season 4B, and Floki is never the same. He’s devastated about it, and it changes him.

Floki buries his wife under a tree, and it’s clear how much she meant to him when he says “Farewell, my heart.”

Floki eventually starts a settlement in Iceland once he discovers it. But that doesn’t lead anywhere good when the settlers start killing each other. Floki eventually walks into a cave where he finds a cross. A volcano erupts that surrounds the cave while he’s inside, but luckily he makes it out alive and finds his way to the Golden Land, where he meets up with Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith), another son of Ragnar, years later.

Despite the loss of Helga, Floki manages to go on with his life eventually.
