‘Virgin River’: Has the Show Been Canceled?
Virgin River is one of Netflix’s most endearing shows. The drama series centers around Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), a nurse and midwife who moves to Virgin River after her life in Los Angeles falls apart. Upon her arrival in Virgin River, Mel is shocked to discover how interconnected all of the people of the town are.
She’s also stunned by her own attraction to the town’s bar owner, former Marine, Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson). For three seasons fans have watched Mel navigate her new life as well as the ups and downs in her romance with Jack. Still, despite the show’s popularity, Netflix has remained silent on what’s next for Virgin River.
‘Virgin River’ is one of Netflix’s biggest hits
Though Virgin River was a relatively quiet show when it first debuted on Netflix, it has since exploded in the ratings. It’s a comforting show that offers romance and drama amid the chaos of our everyday real lives. Virgin River Season 3 debuted on Netflix on July 9, 2021. Nielsen is reporting that in just the first three days the show was up, over 1.4 million viewers watched. Loki had been dominating the charts before then but it trailed the Netflix series with just 1.08 million viewers.
While Virgin River has certainly been bringing in the ratings, the streaming service has remained very quiet about what’s happening with the show next.
Has ‘Virgin River’ been canceled by Netflix?
Despite the astronomical ratings for Virgin River, Netflix has remained shockingly silent about the show. They have not canceled the series, but the streaming platform has also remained quiet about a renewal. However, should a new season get greenlit, showrunner, Sue Tenney has many ideas when it comes to where she wants the narrative to go next.
“I want to do as many seasons as we can,” Tenney told Us Weekly. She also hinted at who shot Jack. “If we get the actual reveal [in season 4], it would detail more of how this all was intertwined,” she explained. “The webbing of that story goes all the way back to the first season, so it’s a connective tissue that goes through four seasons.”
Tenney also explained that the father of Mel’s baby will also be revealed in season 4.
‘Virgin River’ could be secretly filming Season 4
Though there has been neither a renewal announcement nor a cancelation announcement about Virgin River Season 4, that doesn’t mean that a new season isn’t on the horizon. Since Netflix is not beholden to the same regulations as traditional network TV, they often work on their own timeline when it comes to announcements.
For weeks, there have been rumors that the series is already filming season 4 in Vancouver. In fact, Tim Matheson who portays Doc Mullins on the show may have slyly confirmed the news. “Well, Netflix is quite quiet about all that [production updates] – I just hesitate to say anything that they might get upset [about],” Matheson told Radio Times via Hello! Magazine. “My understanding is that it will be like any day now.”
It looks like we may get a renewal announcement quite soon.
