‘Virgin River’ Season 2: Star Alexandra Breckenridge Says Charmaine Is ‘A Little Crazy Pants’
Virgin River’s big love triangle isn’t going to get any less complicated in season 2. The sophomore installment of the Netflix series drops Nov. 27, and the tricky situation between Jack (Martin Henderson), Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge), and Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) is now even more fraught since Charmaine revealed in the season 1 finale that she is pregnant with her ex-boyfriend’s child.
Where things stood with Mel, Jack, and Charmaine at the end of ‘Virgin River’ Season 1
When viewers last saw the residents of Virgin River, Charmaine had just dropped a major bombshell: She was pregnant with Jack’s baby.
Jack and Charmaine had ended their casual relationship and he had just started dating Mel, the nurse practitioner who moved to the small town of Virgin River at the beginning of the season. Jack, a former Marine, felt a responsibility to Charmaine and her baby, but that didn’t change his romantic feelings for Mel.
However, the news of Charmaine’s pregnancy was tough for Mel to take. As we learned in season 1, she left Los Angeles for Virgin River after giving birth to a stillborn baby and then later losing her husband in a car accident. While she wants children, she can’t get pregnant again. In the season 1 finale, she leaves town. But as seen in the season 2 trailer, she decides to come back to Virgin River, though the situation between her, Jack, and Charmaine is still unresolved.
Charmaine will be a wild card in ‘Virgin River’ Season 2
Charmaine is definitely in love with Jack, but his feelings for her aren’t as serious. The state of their relationship makes her a bit of a wild card in the upcoming season, Breckenridge told TVLine.
Charmaine is “a little crazy pants,” the This Is Us actor said. “The thing is, Charmaine’s base level is already a little bit crazy, and then she gets pregnant… by her ex-boyfriend… who she’s still in love with.”
Henderson told the publication that Charmaine wasn’t above manipulating a situation to get what she wants.
“Being a Marine is such an integral part of who [Jack] is, and that extends to his responsibilities as a future father and his desire to be there for Charmaine,” Henderson said. “Unfortunately, those duties are often at odds with what Mel would want, which makes for a messy, complicated triangle between the three.”
“They’re all after certain things, and the negotiation is clumsy,” he added. “Charmaine, of course, manipulates things to the best of her abilities, and then it’s up to Jack and Mel to navigate that in a way honors themselves and each other.”
Jack and Mel will eventually ‘succumb’ to their attraction
While the situation between Mel and Jack is complicated, there’s no denying the sparks between the two. Late in Virgin River Season 1, they finally shared their first kiss. And it sounds like it won’t be their last.
“You’ll see Jack and Mel struggle against their attraction in season 2, and you’ll see what happens if they succumb to it,” showrunner Sue Tenney told TVLine. “You’ll see what that means for their future — and how that future gets massively complicated in the very last moments of the season.”
Virgin River Season 2 premieres Nov. 27 on Netflix.
