Vogue Compares Amber Heard Memes to a ‘Modern-Day Witch Trial’
Amber Heard memes are hitting the Internet non-stop ever since the beginning of the Johnny Depp defamation trial. As a result, Depp is getting plenty of great press, while Heard is getting slammed across all social media platforms. However, some folks are putting shame on the Heard memes, calling the case a “modern-day witch trial.”
Johnny Depp v Amber Heard memes sent social media into a frenzy
Social media continues to explode every day that more content comes from the live-streamed defamation case. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok are just a few of the platforms that the world is using to slam Heard with memes based on the case. However, they are also taking aim at her legal team, as a result of several slip-ups.
Heard ultimately fired her previous PR team to hire a new one with hopes that they can reduce some of the negative headlines. Depp fans continue to support the actor, but it doesn’t stop the Heard memes from coming. However, some folks are taking a stand and pushing against the grain of popular opinion.
Vogue opinion piece compared Amber Heard memes to a ‘modern-day witch trial’
Raven Smith’s opinion piece in Vogue is getting a lot of attention around the world with the title “Why It’s Time to Believe Amber Heard.” He doesn’t minimize the serious accusations made in both Depp and Heard’s testimonies but takes aim at the social media frenzy in the Heard memes, including #AmberTurd.
Smith pointed to the London’s High Court that found allegations against Depp’s status as a “wife-beater” to be “substantially true,” according to BBC.
The writer called the Heard memes “misogynist,” as many of them ridicule her appearance. Smith put aside the trial itself, focusing on “pummeling by social media,” calling it a “modern-day witch trial.”
He concluded his article, asserting, “It’s time to believe women–all women. It’s time to believe Heard. The British courts believed Depp beat his ex-wife. What’s stopping the rest of us?”
Reddit and Twitter react to the Vogue opinion piece
However, Twitter continues to attack Smith for his opinion piece, alleging that he hasn’t watched the defamation trial. Some users recognize that some of the Heard memes took things too far, but that doesn’t prove her innocence. Nevertheless, Smith did point out in the piece that the world will likely never know exactly what took place in their relationship.
However, a Reddit thread is taking another position on the issue. Several users wrote that Depp and Heard’s PR teams are hard at work to get headlines that make their clients most sympathetic. However, they pointed to London’s High Court ruling as a reason to believe Heard and slam the memes.
It’s clear that the Depp and Heard defamation trial is causing a lot of heated discussion on social media. However, the large majority of social media continues to share Heard memes and defend Depp.
