‘WandaVision’: Kathryn Hahn Said Agatha Harkness Needed That Ending; She Might Actually Prefer It
The WandaVision season finale was definitely full of answers and concluded several characters’ storylines. It, of course, still left certain aspects open-ended so that Wanda Maximoff’s story (and others’) can continue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like with all the MCU films. And while Agatha Harkness’ ending was definite, for now, it also isn’t as bad as it might seem according to Kathryn Hahn. [Spoiler alert: Spoilers ahead for WandaVision].
Agatha Harkness’ ending isn’t a punishment according to Kathryn Hahn
Even though Agatha Harkness surprised Wanda with her true self, she didn’t win in the end. Wanda caught onto Agatha’s maneuvers very quickly and was able to mimic and use her knowledge against her, creating her one runes and preventing Agatha from taking any powers from Wanda.
Wanda not only gained more power and took the full form of Scarlet Witch, but she sentenced Agatha to live in Westview, powerless. She’s forced to live in the nosy neighbor role that she created when playing into Wanda’s reality. While that might seem like a punishment, Hahn said it’s a good thing for her character.
“I actually don’t think, ultimately, that she minds it,” she told The New York Times in an interview on March 7. “She needed to rest for a hot second. She’s been very restless.”
Hahn said that Agatha’s been “very lonely” for so long that she loved the companionship she was able to have in Westview in the short time Wanda created that reality. She mentioned Ralph, Dottie, even the mailman.
“For the moment, I think she’s actually OK to just loosen the corset and sit and have a muffin and a latte,” Hahn said.
When Hahn read the role, she thought it was funny that Agatha was changed from the old sorceress in the comics. It makes sense, to Hahn, that this new version of Agatha Harkness loved playing in Wanda’s reality.
“I imagined that she really enjoyed sticking around and being in these sitcoms,” Hahn said. “She’s been flying around for a couple of centuries without a coven before she revealed herself, and she’d love to have a friend for a second.”
Hahn wants to come back and she might be set up for a return as well
The dramatic final battle of course went in Wanda’s favor but Agatha does seem frightened or at least concerned about what Wanda awakened. Whether that’s inside of her or in the universe, Agatha alludes to something dark in Wanda’s future. The post-credits scene shows Wanda searching through the Darkhold, Agatha’s Book of the Damned, so we know she’s actively looking for ways to bring her children back since their screams can be heard as she’s doing it.
In the comics, Agatha is a sort of mentor to Wanda, and the last conversation Wanda and Agatha have is one that isn’t full of closure. Agatha doesn’t want to be left in Westview, despite Hahn’s opinion on her need for a timeout. Wanda tells her she knows where to find her. So that leaves it open for Agatha to return, especially if Wanda opens something she can’t handle alone or doesn’t understand.
When The New York Times asked Hahn if Agatha would show up again, she said she had “no idea.” But she wants to.
“Oh, me too. I want to,” Hahn said. “Now that I have a taste of it, I’m like, ahh. I really, really love it.
Hahn signed onto ‘WandaVision’ because of the strong women in front of and behind the camera
Hahn truly was a scene-stealer and a show-stopper, and with “Agatha All Along” being the song of 2021 already, it’s hard to imagine the show without her. And when Hahn signed on, she said she did it because grief was at the core of the story and because of all the women involved.
“I was so turned on by the ambition and had mad respect for the fact that it is a superhero story that is ultimately about grief,” she said.
And that there are so many women involved. And I love a witch, I really do.”
She said that it, of course, had action, but it went beyond that and did so from the start. Plus, she loved Wanda and Agatha’s relationship, even though it’s fraught.
“There’s something I loved between the relationship of Agatha and Wanda,” she said. “We talked a lot about Amadeus and Salieri, in terms of their relationship — Agatha wishes that she could make the kind of music that the Scarlet Witch just had naturally. For someone that has spent centuries studying this, to meet a young person to whom it comes completely naturally, it’s maddening and you want to know why.”
