Olivia Plath Returned to ‘Welcome to Plathville’ to Counter the ‘Fundie Crazy’

Since splitting from her husband, Ethan Plath, and moving to Los Angeles, Olivia has been exploring new experiences. That includes visiting a tarot card reader, something that would have been off-limits just a few years ago.

“I feel I’m very open to what would have been deemed occult practices when I was a kid,” she shared.

Olivia went into the experience with an open mind. But once the reading began, she found herself shaken. As the reader examined the cards, she revealed that she saw “an angel around you, protecting you and guiding you.”

The woman then asked if Olivia had a brother. She replied that she has four brothers, including one who died earlier that year.

“That’s the one here,” the reader said. “I’m sorry. God rest his soul.”

During the reading, both Olivia and her sister Lydia got visibly emotional when their brother was mentioned. In an interview, Olivia opened up about losing her sibling.

“Earlier this year, at the same time that Ethan and I were getting divorced, my youngest brother was killed unexpectedly,” she said.

Micah, 15, died in May 2023 after he was struck by a car while cycling near his home in Tennessee. He was the second-youngest of Olivia’s nine siblings. In an Instagram tribute posted shortly after his death, she shared her “sweet memories” of their childhood together and her regret that they had not spent more time together in recent years.

Though Olivia has a complicated relationship with her family, she did return home for Micah’s funeral, an experience she described as “weird.”

“[M]y parents and the older siblings who have kind of kept to that very religious lifestyle, the way they got through that funeral and that week was, ‘We know he’s in heaven and that’s what we’re putting our faith and trust on,’” she said.

But Olivia, who has left the faith of her parents behind, struggled to process the loss.

During the funeral, she wondered, “So, if you don’t believe that, what do you have?”

“I found myself asking all the time, ‘Is he just gone completely? Does he exist in a different realm?’ I don’t know and it’s scary not to know. And I understand why people use religion as a crutch. I just don’t want to lean on it.”
