Cardi B vowed to get rid of one of New York City’s peskiest problems if she was elected mayor.

The Grammy-award winning rapper has been vocal on multiple occasions about her love of politics. She said the fascination with history began in school and continued as she became older. The topic of politics came up during a sit-down interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live. During their discussion, Kimmel mentioned that representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, like Cardi, grew up in Bronx, New York.

As Cardi, born Belcalis Almanzar, sat on stage with a dark blue suit and a straight bob, she explained that while she loves politics and follows people like Cortez, she feels she has to watch what she says about political news as a public figure. She said she knows she will be criticized for any opinion she has and wants to keep them.

Although she knows her time as a politician would be chaotic, Cardi said if she ever wanted to become the Mayor of New York City, she would address an issue the city faces daily. She said she would get rid of the “rats and raccoons” that she always sees around New York. While both creatures are annoying to her, Cardi said raccoons are her biggest problem. Instead of scattering when they see someone like rats do, Cardi joked that the raccoons aren’t “afraid” of anyone and will engage in a stare-down if needed.

Cardi has expressed her desire to have a career in politics

In addition to planning her first move as mayor, Cardi shared that she would want to run for another role in office in the future. Throughout her fame, she has sounded off on multiple U.S. political climate issues through social media. She typically discusses the topics on Instagram to educate her fans about certain issues in the world, such as President Donald Trump’s government shutdown.

In January 2020, Cardi shared on Twitter that she thinks she would be a good candidate for Congress. She said the role would align with her passion for government and would be something she would genuinely enjoy.

“I think I want to be a politician. I really love government even tho I disagree with Government,” she tweeted.

Cardi opted not to perform at the Super Bowl in support of the Black Lives Matter movement

Even though Cardi is known for her lavish lifestyle, the rapper shared in 2019 that she drew the line at certain financial opportunities. In February 2019, she was asked to perform at the Super Bowl but decided to turn the opportunity down. She revealed to Associated Press that she had “mixed feelings” about the performance because of the NFL’s controversy with Colin Kaepernick. The football player caused controversy after kneeling during the National Anthem to raise awareness of police brutality, racial inequality, and other social issues. Cardi said her husband, Offset, didn’t even attend the event, even though he loves football.

“You have to sacrifice that. I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform,” she said. “But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.”

Although Cardi adamantly supported Bernie Sanders’ run for president in 2019, she wanted to share her voice on behalf of the community with Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden. In August 2020, Elle Magazine shared Cardi’s video interviewing Biden about what she would like to see if he becomes the next POTUS. She said she would like to see everyone have access to healthcare. Cardi also told Biden she wants Black people to have more protection from police brutality.

“What I want is free Medicare,” Cardi explained. “It’s important to have free [healthcare] because look at what is happening right now. Of course, I think we need free college. And I want Black people to stop getting killed and no justice for it. I’m tired of it. I’m sick of it. I just want laws that are fair to Black citizens and that are fair for cops, too.”
