What Does Daniel Radcliffe Think of Meghan Markle and the Royal Family?
Although she was born in the United States, Meghan Markle has become one of Britain’s greatest icons. Daniel Radcliffe is also one of Britain’s greatest icons. When asked about Markle and her family in a People interview, Radcliffe had lots of things to say.
Daniel Radcliffe is asked about Meghan Markle
Radcliffe began acting at the age of 5 in a BBC production of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield. Shortly afterward, he was cast as the title character in the Harry Potter film series, one of the most successful franchises in movie history. Since then, Radcliffe has acted in other notable films like The Woman in Black and Swiss Army Man. If anybody understands the spotlight, he does.
Radcliffe admitted “I don’t take a huge interest [in the royal family].” However, he’s “[picked] up that Meghan Markle is being treated to the full force of the British media.” He said he feels “terrible” for the duchess.
He added “I can only imagine. That’s why I always thought [Meghan’s] relationship [with Prince Harry] was sweet. Because I was like, ‘She must love you, if she wants to get involved in this crazy life.’ It must be insane.”
Because of the Prince Andrew scandal, many are questioning the validity of the monarchy. Radcliffe, however, sympathizes with the royal family in light of the scrutiny they face. “They went through it from birth. I can’t imagine what that life must be like. So while I’m not into the institution of the monarchy, I have a huge amount of respect and empathy for [the royals].”
What do the royals think about ‘Harry Potter’?
Radcliffe might not be interested in the royal family, but they’re certainly interested in him – or at least the character he plays. Marie Claire reports the royal family are huge Harry Potter fans. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, discussed her family’s love for the franchise in the BBC documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70.
She described how Prince Charles entertains his grandchildren, saying “He will get down on his knees and crawl about with them for hours, you know making funny noises and laughing and my grandchildren adore him, absolutely adore him. He reads Harry Potter and he can do all the different voices and I think children really appreciate that.”
A royal visit to Harry Potter Studios
The royal family’s connection to the Harry Potter series exists beyond the home. According to BuzzFeed, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Prince Harry attended the opening of the Warner Brothers Studios in Leavesden, England.
Such a visit would be magical for anyone, but it was extra special for the royals. J. K. Rowling herself arrived to greet them as they entered the part of the studio dedicated to Harry Potter. Prince William lauded the Harry Potter series in a brief speech at the studio. There, he compared the series to the works of the “the great Jacobean playwrights and..the Victorian literary masters.”
Prince William seemed to enjoy his visit, joking “Harry’s just excited to see a real life talking owl in the Harry Potter studios. I haven’t told him yet that Harry Potter is fictional, so please keep the secret for a little longer.”
