What Dwyane Wade Thinks of Terry Crews’s Apology To Gabrielle Union
The fallout from Gabrielle Union’s firing from America’s Got Talent doesn’t seem to be letting up any time soon. Fans have chimed in on social media and she’s received much support from industry insiders regarding Hollywood’s sexist and racist tendencies.
One person who did not share in the support was actor Terry Crews. After making statements in support of the show and network, he recently apologized but Union’s husband, Dwyane Wade, is not impressed by Crews’s apology.
Terry Crews says his experience on ‘America’s Got Talent’ was not like Gabrielle Union’s
During an appearance on the third hour of The Today Show, Crews spoke in opposition of Union’s experience in dealing with a toxic work environment at NBC and America’s Got Talent. Union accused the network of an intense sexist and racist environment in which she was constantly subjected to inappropriate and uncomfortable behaviors of her peers and executives.
“I can’t speak for sexism…but I can speak on any racism comments. That was never my experience,” Crews stated. “In fact, it was the most diverse place I’ve been in my 20 years of entertainment… the top ten acts were Asian, women, older, younger, black, white, everything in the gamut.”
Crews is the current host of the reality talent competition. Union, who has not spoken publicly since her departure from the show, responded to Crews in a series of tweets.
“Ask about what happens to all that diversity folks are talking about BEHIND THE SCENES,” she said in one tweet. “Like, legit… where the hell is all that diversity in the production though homie? In the decision making ranks who control the fate of the diversity in front of the camera?”
Terry Crews apologizes for not supporting Gabrielle Union
After much backlash from fans and critics for his remarks, Crews took to Twitter to offer an apology to Union for his statements.
“I want you to know it was never my intention to invalidate your experience— but that is what I did,” he said in the midst of a series of apology tweets. “I apologize. You have been through a lot in this business, and with that I empathize with the struggle toward fairness and equality in the workplace.”
Crews admitted in a follow-up tweet that comments from the public directed towards him caused him to react without thinking, thus making non-supportive comments towards Union. He also noted that though he experience may have been pleasant, that does not mean that someone else’s reflects such. “I spoke from my own personal point of view without first taking into consideration someone else’s experience,” he said.”
Dwyane Wade does not care for Terry Crews’ apology
Wade has been a fierce supporter of his wife throughout this entire ordeal. When news first broke of Union’s firing, he spoke out on Twitter in his wife’s defense.
Wade first mentioned how great his wife was as a host, pointing to Union’s social media interactions and the ratings of the show. He then expressed his shock at her firing.
“So when I got the news that my wife was being fired – my first question was obviously why!” Wade asked in a follow-up tweet. “I’m still waiting on a good answer to that question. But if anyone knows @itsgabrielleu or have heard of her you know she’s an advocate for our community and culture.”
Following Crew’s Twitter apology, Wade tweeted out, “Someone please take @terrycrews phone.”
Crews hasn’t responded but if the past few weeks are any indicator, the back and forth regarding this matter will continue.
