‘What If’ Season 2 Could See More Spider-Man Episodes, the Director Reveals
Marvel’s What If Season 1 came to an explosive close, as the Guardians of the Multiverse fought to protect everything. However, fans look beyond into What If Season 2 and if any more Spider-Man stories could hit Disney+. While director Bryan Andrews admits that he cannot confirm much, he remains hopeful for more episodes featuring the fan-favorite webhead.
Showrunners’ concern if Spider-Man could appear at all
As always, Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man agreement caused questions.
Head writer AC Bradley brought concern about if Spider-Man could appear in What If…? at all, let alone in season 2.
“I was like, ‘Can we just touch Spider-Man?’” Bradley shared with ComicBook. “And they went, ‘Don’t worry about it. We’re going to figure it out. Just tell the best story you can, and we’ll cross that bridge.’”
However, Peter Parker did appear. Audiences saw Spider-Man in Marvel’s What If Season 1 episode ‘What If…Zombies?!’
“That was kind of the mandate across the board with Marvel: As long as you’re not doing something that we’re doing in the movies, go have fun, and we’ll figure it out,” Bradley said.
Bryan Andrews remains ‘hopeful’ for more Spider-Man in ‘What If’ Season 2
Andrews then opened up after the What If Season Finale, dropping hints about possible future Spider-Man episodes.
“Well, we can’t talk too much about what may or may not be happening in Season 2,” Andrews told ComicBook. “But we do love Spider-Man, so who knows what may happen in the future.”
And even the fans love Spider-Man, too. Audiences latched onto the ‘Zombie Hunter’ version of Peter Parker.
Andrews went on to express that anything remains possible given enough seasons.
“It’s just a question of if we’re able to do enough shows or enough seasons, who knows what we’ll get,” Andrews said. “We’ll definitely be able to — hopefully, at that point — either revisit characters…in a way that we’re familiar with and then spin them…something else differently.”
However, Andrews could only tease fans about What If Season 2. Audiences have to wait a bit long for word on the Disney streaming show.
“When it comes to Season 2, we can’t say anything about that stuff,” he said.
‘What If’ Season 1 expanded Spider-Man’s lore in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Even though Marvel’s What If show remains non-canon to the bigger Marvel Universe, Spider-Man still gave fans some massive lore reveals.
Both fans and showrunners want to see more from the webhead. With the entire Multiverse to play with, a What If Season 2 episode focusing on Spider-Man is exciting.
When the Watcher ventured to build the Guardians of the Multiverse, he skipped the universe full of Marvel zombies. While Dr. Strange did summon the Scarlet Witch zombie to fight, fans felt Spider-Man’s absence.
Spider-Man remains one of the most popular comic characters of all time. It would be criminal not to explore more of the web slinger’s stories in What If Season 2.
