Jhené Aiko’s early life

Aiko was born in Ladera Heights, California on March 16, 1988. She started her career in the early 2000s contributing vocals to the pop group B2K.

Some fans knew her as the cousin of B2K rapper Lil Fizz, but the two aren’t actually related. It was a marketing ploy by music executives to boost her fame and earn her some much-needed exposure.

After making appearances on multiple songs, including some on B2K’s You Got Served album (2003), Aiko started preparing to release her debut studio album: My Name Is Jhené.

Genius reports that it was slated for a December 2003 release, but the album wound up being shelved. With her career in limbo, Aiko decided to leave the industry and focus on her education.

She finished high school and went on to attend West Los Angeles College, according to The Los Angeles Times. She was still enrolled when she became pregnant in 2008.

In November of that year, she gave birth to her first and only child, daughter Namiko Love, whom she shares with singer O’Ryan. O’Ryan is also the brother of B2K’s lead singer, Omarion.

Jhené Aiko’s career

Following the birth of Namiko, Aiko shifted her focus back to music.

“She gave me the focus, the drive, and the urgency to get something done,” Aiko told Complex of her daughter. “I have always been about getting work done but with a child, something needs to happen and she just put more passion as far as what I wanted to do with my music, what I wanted to sing about and my message.”

In 2011, she released the mixtape, Sailing Souls, on her eponymous website to critical acclaim. The project, which featured appearances from stars such as Miguel and Drake, created lots of buzz and served as a springboard for her career.

Aiko has since released three albums — the most recent being Chilombo, which debuted on March 6 to widespread praise. She also formed a hip hop group with her on-off boyfriend Big Sean — called Twenty88 — that released a self-titled album in 2016 to positive reviews.

Outside of music, Aiko is also a poet. In 2017, she released a poetry book titled 2Fish, which contains writings from Aiko’s adolescence and adult years. The book received glowing reviews from fans and critics alike.
