What Is Michael Strahan’s ‘Good Morning America’ Salary?
There are not many people who can say they have been both a successful football player and a popular morning show host. Michael Strahan is one of those people. It has been 11 years Strahan retired from the NFL and now he’s a lead host on one of the longest running morning talk shows on TV. How did he get here and what’s his salary on Good Morning America?
Michael Strahan played football for years before becoming a talk show host
Strahan started playing football at a young age. The defensive lineman played for Texas Southern University before being drafted by the New York Giants in 1993. Throughout his career he made the pro bowl team seven times, he set a record for the most sacks in a single season, and he won a Super Bowl ring in his final professional game. In 2014, Strahan was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 1999, Strahan became the Giant’s highest paid player when he signed a four-year $32 million contract. In addition to being the highest paid Giant’s player, Strahan was one of the top-paid defensive players in the league. Strahan’s highest paying season in the NFL was 2002-2003 when he made $20.6 million.
Michael Strahan replaced Regis Philbin
After retiring from the NFL in 2008, Strahan moved onto a career in front of the camera. He did a few commercials for Subway and worked as an analyst for Fox Sports. In 2012, Strahan was offered the co-host job next to Kelly Ripa, replacing longtime host Regis Philbin.
Philbin announced his retirement in early 2011. He told fans the show would go on and
Strahan quickly became a popular host and was paid accordingly. In 2013, the host was reportedly making $4 million per year on Live! Thanks to his popularity, Strahan received a pay raise, making $10 million per year in 2015.
Ripa was blindsided when Strahan left
Strahan’s announcement that he would be leaving Live! in 2016 took everyone by surprise, including co-host Kelly Ripa. Along with hosting Live! full time, Strahan had also been appearing frequently on Good Morning America. The host announced in April 2016 that he would be leaving Live! to do Good Morning America full time that September.
In the days that followed Strahan’s announcement, Ripa took a leave of absence from the show. Many people speculated that she was hurt and upset for being kept out of the loop. Strahan later responded that he felt Ripa threw him under the bus with her reaction to the news, stating, “I wasn’t surprised by her reaction at all, but I can’t control somebody else’s actions. I was there four years, and it’s about more than just being in front of the camera.”
At the time of his departure, Strahan had won two Daytime Emmy awards. In addition to hosting Good Morning America, Strahan also hosted the game show, $100,000 pyramid.
Michael Strahan’s ‘GMA’ salary ranks among the top
In 2017, Strahan made Forbes’ list for the world’s highest paid TV hosts. Strahan came in at number 9, earning $21.5 million dollars that year, higher than his former co-host Ripa and higher than any of his GMA co-hosts.
While not all of his salary came from GMA a good portion of it did. Recent reports show that Strahan makes $17 million per year hosting the morning show, just behind co-host Robin Roberts who makes $18 million per year.
