As Super Bowl LIV kicks off, all eyes are on Shakira. She’s slated to take the stage at the halftime show on Feb. 2 alongside Jennifer Lopez and deliver one of the most anticipated performances in Super Bowl history.

While many people recognize Shakira for hits such as the pop earworms “Whenever, Wherever” and “Hips Don’t Lie,” there are some who might not be all that familiar with her and her career. Let’s talk more about that and her net worth below.

Shakira’s early life

Shakira was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. Early on, she experienced poverty and hardship. At age 8, her father’s business went bankrupt and her family struggled.

“He sent me and my mother to stay with relatives in Los Angeles so he could liquidate things, and when we came back he had sold all our furniture, our color television and both cars, and we had no air-conditioning,” she told The Guardian.

“The new reality was a shock to me, so my parents decided to take me to the park where orphans were sniffing glue to put my situation in perspective,” Shakira continued. “I remember it so vividly: I made myself a promise that one day I would, one, vindicate my parents’ social and economic situation and, two, do something about those kids. That image of those kids that day in the park has never left my mind.’”

Shakira turned to music as a way out and wrote her first album at age 8 (via Oprah Magazine).

A summary of Shakira’s career

After landing a record deal at 13, Shakira released her debut album, Magia, in 1991. She followed up with 1993’s Peligro, but both albums were commercial disappointments.

She would eventually find success in the Latin world with her next two album — Pies Descalzos (1995) and Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998) — before breaking out on the American music scene with 2001’s Laundry Service. The album featured the hit song “Whenever, Wherever.”

She garnered more attention after teaming up with Beyoncé for 2007’s “Beautiful Liar” and working with Wyclef Jean. Over the next few years, Shakira released six widely successful albums and won numerous awards for her music — including three Grammys.

She also made a name for herself outside of music. Shakira served as a judge on the hit competition series The Voice in 2013 but left the show after one season to spend more time with her family.

Oh, and she made good on her promise to help children. She supports various charities and organizations that help poor and struggling kids.

What is Shakira’s net worth?

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Shakira’s current net worth is a staggering $300 million.

While she’s lived much of her life outside the spotlight in recent years, her performance at the halftime show could mark the beginning of a career comeback. In the event it does, we expect to see those numbers swell even more in the future. But we’ll see.
