Virgil Abloh was highly regarded by many people in the entertainment industry and beyond. The designer and fashion executive worked with the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, and other stars, and made a name for himself as a creative visionary.

Virgil Abloh was a respected designer

Abloh first broke into the fashion industry in the late 2000s. He interned at Fendi’s office in Rome, Italy alongside Kanye West, who himself was already a well-known artist with platinum-selling albums and singles. From there, Abloh and West began a collaborative relationship and became close friends.

Abloh received a Grammy Award nomination for his work on West and Jay-Z’s earth-shattering 2011 album Watch the Throne. In 2012, he became the artistic director of Louis Vuitton. He also became the creative director of West’s company Donda.

Virgil Abloh’s net worth at the time of his death in 2021

After interning at Fendi, Abloh continued to rise through the ranks and become one of the industry’s most highly-respected creatives. That resulted in a sizable personal fortune for the Chicago native.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Abloh had a net worth of $100 million at the time of his death. After joining Louis Vuitton in 2018, his base salary from LVMH was reportedly $10 million per year.

Abloh leaves behind a wife and two children. He met his wife Shannon in high school and the couple dated for 10 years before they got married. Still, most of their relationship remained private throughout his life. Together, they have two children together: a son, Grey, and a daughter, Lowe.

Kanye West and Drake paid tribute to Virgil Abloh

Abloh’s death in November 2021 from a private battle with cancer shocked the world, including many of those in the industry who worked with him. Just hours after his death, West dedicated his Sunday Service to his friend and longtime collaborator. “In loving memory of Virgil Abloh, the creative director of Donda,” the website read.

West wasn’t the only bestselling rapper to pay homage to Abloh after his death. Drake shared photos of them together on his Instagram in a touching tribute of his own. 

“My plan is to touch the sky 1000 more times for you,” the “Nice For What” rapper said. “Love you eternally, brother. Thank you for everything.”

Abloh remained engaged in his work until his passing and believed in the power of art to change the world. His family shared a statement on Instagram after his death, and thanked fans for their outpouring of support. “Through it all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered,” his family said in their statement. “Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design.”
