‘Wheel of Fortune’: Pat Sajak Calls Contestant’s Story ‘Pointless’
Wheel of Fortune is America’s favorite TV game show. Since 1983 viewers have tuned in to watch the Pat Sajak and Vanna White word puzzle game. Yet throughout the show’s 39 seasons, there have been controversial moments. The show’s latest uproar stems from Sajak’s comments to a contestant.
‘Wheel of Fortune’ host Pat Sajak calls this contestant’s intro “pointless”
Viewers watch as three contestants battle it out on Wheel of Fortune every day. Fans get to know the players and root for their favorite. Sajak asks the contestants to introduce themselves and share an interesting story during each episode.
On the March 9th episode, contestant Scott Ingwersen told a story about chopping off his big toe. Ingwersen explained that when he was 12-years-old, he was riding his bike when he fell, and the top of his toe was cut off. A few minutes after the accident, paramedics drove by and stopped to help him. Ingwersen had a laceration, and the medics reattached his toe.
After hearing the story, Sajak replied, “That may have been the most pointless story ever told. And you told it, Scott. Congratulations to you.”
Fan reaction to Pat Sajak’s comment
It didn’t take long for Sajak’s comment to make the rounds. Wheel of Fortune fans began discussing his pointless comment on social media. Fans on Twitter were upset with Sajak’s jab.
“Sometimes @patsajak says mean things. Lol, like telling that man his story was pointless. Rude!” wrote one user.
“Vanna should be host. Pat has become an unwatchable snob,” another commenter chimed in.
While many viewers were angry with Sajak, others were supportive of him. On a Reddit thread, viewers came to his defense. “I didn’t take it as rude at all. It seemed to me to be all in good fun, and the contestant seemed to me to take it that way too,” one user wrote.
“Friendly reminder that if the contestant truly objected to Pat’s behavior, they would have cut it out. Pat mentioned several times that he uses the first commercial to address those with the contestants, and they redo/edit if there are problems,” another fan replied.
The show’s been in the news in recent weeks
Wheel of Fortune and Sajak has been making headlines in recent weeks. Aside from Sajak’s comments, last week, the show gained media attention with the “Another Feather In Your Cap” puzzle. The March 1st episode took contestants two minutes and 10 failed attempts to guess the phrase, which was missing four letters.
Fans immediately flooded social media with criticism over the contestants’ inability to solve a simple puzzle. The backlash toward the contestants caused Sajak to speak out. The host tweeted that fans shouldn’t be mocking the players. Now, Sajak is coming under fire for similar behavior.
