Things are changing in Hope Valley. A just-released trailer for When Calls the Heart Season 9 introduces fresh faces and teases some major moments for Elizabeth and the rest of the show’s characters when the show returns. The new episodes premiere March 6 on Hallmark Channel

It’s a ‘new era’ in Hope Valley in the ‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 9 trailer

Time marches on, even in Hope Valley.

“We’re on the threshold of a new era,” Bill Avery (Jack Wagner) says in a voiceover in the When Calls the Heart Season 9 trailer (via Entertainment Tonight).

The quaint frontier town may be evolving, but not everyone is comfortable with the new developments. In a sneak peek at the new season shared by Hallmark Channel (via YouTube), Mountie Nathan (Kevin McGarry) seems reluctant to embrace a new directive from headquarters. Every Mountie has to learn how to drive a car, though Nathan says he has no intention of giving up his horse.

Viewers will also see how a changing economy affects in Hope Valley next season, director Siobhan Devine said in a 2021 interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “I think one of the things that’s really interesting about this coming season is really the advent of industrialization,” she said. “That’s really interesting because that really would have happened in 1919.”

A potential love interest for Nathan rides into town

Having to trade his horse for a car might not be the only big change for Nathan next season. In the trailer, he looks stunned when newcomer Mei Suo (Amanda Wong) rides into town on a horse. Fans already got a look at Hope Valley’s newest resident in a sneak peek (via YouTube), where she and Nathan had a flirty moment in the saloon.

“Did I see you ride into town?” he asks.

“Did you?” she replies coyly.

After being gently rejected by Elizabeth at the end of season 8, Nathan is due for some luck in love. It definitely looks like Mei Suo could be the woman who heals his heart.

Gowen faces his past

The season 9 trailer also hints that some big things are in store for Henry Gowen (Martin Cummins). He’s back in Hope Valley after leaving town at the end of season 8, and it sounds like he’s finally ready to own up to his role in the devastating mine disaster that killed so many men before the start of the show’s first season.

“I can’t quite outrun my past,” he says to Elizabeth before a shot of him standing in front of the opening to the now-closed mine.

The ex-mine boss is no longer the villain he was when When Calls the Heart began. Over the years, he’s evolved into a more nuanced character. But there are still lingering unknowns about the mine collapse and who’s responsible. Having Gowen confront those questions head-on could complete his long redemption arc.

Elizabeth celebrates the release of her book in ‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 9

Finally, Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) is moving on in her romance with Lucas (Chris McNally). The trailer opens with a shot of the happy couple walking with her son Little Jack (Hyland Goodrich).

Elizabeth is also celebrating the release of her book. (Of course, her friends come together to throw her a party to mark the occasion.) “I wrote this as a love letter to my son,” she says. “And to everyone else in this town.”

It also looks like there are some tense moments ahead in season 9. Nathan has a close encounter with a speeding car, and a fire breaks out in town as a terrified Elizabeth watches. What could be the cause – and is anyone in danger? Fans will find out when When Calls the Heart returns for season 9 on Sunday, March 6 at 8 p.m. ET on Hallmark Channel.
