When Will ‘Derry Girls’ Return to Netflix for Season 3?
It’s been two years since fans last saw Derry Girls on their TV screens. The Irish comedy first premiered in Britain in 2018. It was subsequently released on Netflix internationally, where it gained a following. The show centers on four Irish girls (and one British boy) navigating their teenage years in 90s Northern Ireland during The Troubles.
Fans have been wondering when they will be seeing Erin and the gang again since season 2 was released internationally in 2019. Recently, cast members revealed various details about the upcoming season, including when it will premiere.
‘Derry Girls’ will start filming this year
Though COVID-19 pushed Derry Girls season 3 back, the series should resume filming soon.
In early August, Orla McCool herself, Louisa Harland, revealed to JOE that Derry Girl’s new season had not started filming. “It’s not going. But it will be going! I’m not currently Orla McCool, but I will be very, very soon, and hopefully [the third season] will be out soon,” Harland said.
“Yeah, we haven’t actually had any scripts, but we’ve heard little nuggets. And I’m laughing even just thinking about them, but they’re good at not giving us the scripts because we get too excited and stuff.”
Sister Michael actor says scheduling could be a problem
Siobhan McSweeney, who plays fan-favorite Sister Michael, reiterated to RadioTimes.com that no one had seen the scripts yet. “The one thing I would say is that we are hoping to do it this year. It’s a scheduling nightmare, as you can imagine.” The show launched multiple careers including Nicola Coughlan, who is currently starring on Netflix’s Bridgerton.
“[Show creator] Lisa [McGee] doesn’t want to compromise on quality, obviously, but I think we’re all very impatient to get it done for very obvious reasons,” McSweeney concluded.
The predicted release date of ‘Derry Girls’’ third season is early 2022
Tara Lynne O’Neill, who plays Erin’s mom Mary told the Irish Mirror that Derry Girls season 3 should be released in early 2022.
“It’s happening this year, it’s definitely happening this year! If we leave it another year, we’ll all be old-age pensioners! It will be called ‘Derry Old Ones!’ No, we’re gonna do it this year, so it will be out early next year. We’re tied in for the filming date, we’re shooting this year.”
Creator says ‘Derry Girls’ could get a movie
Since both the actors and the characters are getting older, season 3 will likely be the beloved show’s final season. Derry Girls creator and showrunner Lisa McGee told i News that after this upcoming season, she would be open to a movie and then end the show after this upcoming season.
“I don’t want to write them beyond 18. It’s about that magic time before you’re officially an adult.”
McGee then teased what is to come of the show’s possible final season. “They’re going to be forced to grow up a bit this series [but] they’re still eejits, they still get into a lot of trouble, and embarrass themselves and do all those things you’d expect the Derry Girls to do, but they do have to face some big things this time.”
‘Derry Girls’ season 3 would focus on what happens during Peacetime
The second season ended with President Bill Clinton’s visit to Ireland after the IRA called a ceasefire, signifying peace. “In series three, we realize that people want this long term. They want to make this work. You were constantly worried about it – you didn’t believe it would last,” McGee said.
“I play with that a lot in series three. Aunt Sarah has this mad idea that there are going to be loads of new criminals out there, now there’s no IRA – ‘Well, we knew what we were dealing with then…’ – People had these ridiculous conversations about what to expect when that was all we’d known.”
