When Will the ‘Fast & Furious’ Franchise End?
No one expected The Fast and the Furious would lead to so many sequels and even a spinoff. But the franchise has managed to last over 20 years. When will the franchise end? We do know what will be the last movie and who will direct it.
‘The Fast and the Furious’ started the franchise
The franchise all started with the 2001 movie, The Fast and the Furious. It starts with a crew stealing electronics from a truck. LAPD officer Brian O’Conner goes undercover to find the crew that did it.
He gets close to Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster), who are involved with street racing. Brian races and comes across the criminals he’s been searching for.
The franchise has managed to survive by almost completely reinventing itself. Now Dom’s crew is much larger by including characters from the sequels, and they all go on missions to take down more dangerous criminals.
When will the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise end?
Believe it or not, the franchise still has more gas in the tank. But the end is in sight.
The series will officially end with an 11th movie, according to Variety. Justin Lin will be directing the last two movies. This won’t be the end of some of the characters, given there will be spinoffs.
We already saw the universe of the movies expand with Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. There hasn’t been an announcement of a sequel for that movie, given Dwayne Johnson’s schedule and more.
Lin talked about his goal for the last two movies. “I think that just by the fan reactions, we now have all of these really great, compelling characters that people love, and I’m hoping that we’re going to have opportunities to really showcase these characters, hopefully in future films and in other mediums,” the director told Deadline.
The director said fans allowed the characters to evolve. “I’m constantly having really great conversations with people, and I really am excited for the future for the franchise,” he said.
Lin was also asked if Johnson and Jason Statham, who played Deckard Shaw, are officially done with the franchise. He answered:
“To me, they’re still in this universe; they’re part of this family. Whatever we do, whenever we’re talking about the next chapter, I never feel like I have any restrictions, so I’m excited for what we build, and as we’re coming to this kind of final chapter of this saga, I think I’m excited to revisit…Any character, in any situation, is up for discussion.”

That does leave the door open for them to come back into the fold for the last movie. But only time will tell if that’ll actually happen.
