Netflix is home to a wide variety of original content, including hit movies and top-notch shows like Stranger Things. In late 2019, fans developed a whole new obsession when The Witcher dropped on the streaming platform.

The show quickly became one of Netflix’s hottest properties, spawning a renewed interest in the novels and video games that inspired the show – as well as a host of memes and articles raving about Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt of Rivia.

These days, with a brand-new season of The Witcher now streaming on Netflix, many fans are wondering about a possible third season, and when it could premier on Netflix.

When will Season 3 of ‘The Witcher’ hit Netflix?

Even though the scripts are in development, it will likely take years before new episodes of The Witcher arrive to Netflix.

In fact, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich pointed out that since they are at the very beginning of the creative process, Season 3 probably won’t land on the streaming platform until 2023 or even later, depending on the individual commitments of the actors.

Still, Hissrich said that she is excited about the direction of the show, noting that Season 3 is based on her favorite book in The Witcher series of novels, a book titled The Time of Contempt.

With five main novels in The Witcher series, as well as standalone books and auxiliary materials, there’s certainly a wealth of story opportunities for showrunners to explore – and fans of the franchise will be on board every step of the way, even if they have to wait a few years to enjoy new episodes.

Season 2 of ‘The Witcher’ recently debuted on Netflix

The second season of The Witcher has managed to build on the world established in the first season, with the three primary characters, Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer, interacting more frequently. Fans have also gotten to see more monsters and mythical lore, allowing them to dive even deeper into the world of The Witcher

Fortunately, fans will eventually be able to enjoy even more of the hit series, although it might take another few years. According to Collider, producers and screenwriters have developed a script for Season 3 of The Witcher, with showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich revealing that,

” … the creative process is now really just starting. We have the scripts, and now we’ll bring directors on, the actors back in, and really start delving in deeper and reflecting back and making sure that it’s the perfect season.”

The Witcher follows the exploits of Geralt of Rivia, a monster-hunter who was magically enhanced as a young boy into a “witcher” – that is, a man capable of slaying a wide variety of demons and monsters.

The first season of The Witcher details how Geralt becomes linked to the young Princess Ciri, as well as how he establishes his mystical connection to the mage Yennefer of Vengerberg. Multiple flashbacks and backstories eventually converge into a single timeline, which unites Geralt and Ciri after the battle for Sodden Hill.

The entire first season of The Witcher was released in December 2019, and fans quickly devoured the series and clamored for more. However, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic delayed filming for some time, and it wasn’t until two years later, in December 2021, that the full second season of the hit fantasy series dropped on Netflix. In the days since, fans have eagerly been devouring the latest episodes.
