Kit Harington portrayed the beloved Jon Snow on the HBO hit Game of Thrones for nearly a decade. Starring alongside several characters — facing death, dealing with deception, and coyly conniving their way out of cruel punishment — Harington rose to stardom on the back of the show.

After signing on to star in Game of Thrones, Kit Harington appeared in The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, Gunpowder, Brimstone, MI-5, and more. He also did some voiceover work for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Yet, without Game of Thrones, and the sudden way the series catapulted him to A-list status, Harington would not be where he is today.

Though growing close with many of his co-stars, as working together day after day can quickly turn acquaintances into dear friends, one co-star shared a similar journey, which is likely why he bonded so strongly with her.

Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington were in similar positions when the joined Game of Thrones, which the actor explained during an interview. Thus, they bonded over a shared experience that others involved could not quite grasp.

Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke both joined Game of Thrones after barely graduating from drama school. One day: they’re hopeful, aspiring actors wondering if they will ever make it in Tinseltown. The next day: their faces are plastered on billboards in Time Square. During an interview with Esquire, Harington explained:

Me, Rose, and Emilia have been best mates for years, but I never got to work with her [Clarke] until season 7. That’s a long time to be experiencing the same show and also the same kind of journey, me and Emilia, because we’ve followed the same path. We both came out of drama school and this was our first big show, and we became kind of the ice and fire of it all a bit—the two youngish leads, I guess. Probably the closest to what we were each experiencing was what the other person was experiencing…

Kit Harington explained that — while being in Game of Thrones may have been a bit jarring for multiple cast members, — he and Clarke weren’t simple in Game of Thrones. They were Game of Thrones. They boasted the most intriguing character arcs and a relationship that kept viewers hooked for seasons. And, they were both quite young and new to the whole showbiz thing. Harington went on:

I think we’re good mates because we, maybe more than anyone else, know what the other one’s going through a bit. I don’t mean to sound like we’re going through the worst thing in the world. But I think no one else other than Emilia will know exactly what being on Thrones is like, the way we’re on Thrones. That’s really how we kind of bonded.

Kit Harington may have bonded with multiple people on the show, but, when reading into his Esquire interview, it’s likely that he and Emilia grew the closest; a subconscious understanding of each other’s predicament likely forged their strong relationship.
