Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander and supermodel Kate Upton are a true power couple as they are both very successful in their respective careers. With all that success comes questions as many have wondered who has the higher net worth the All-Star pitcher or the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover girl.
Here’s the answer to that plus a few other facts you may not have known about the pair including how they almost missed their own wedding and why Verlander says Upton saved his career.
The reason they almost missed their own wedding
Upton and Verlander met while shooting a video game commercial in 2012. Not long after that they began dating and in 2016, the model flashed her diamond engagement ring on the red carpet at the Met Gala.
On Nov. 4, 2017, the were married in Tuscany, Italy, but the couple nearly missed their own wedding abroad because the Astros were playing in the biggest game of the groom’s career.
When the pair initially planned their wedding Verlander was still a member of the Detroit Tigers, but he was traded to the Houston Astros in August 2017. His new team ended up making it to the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The only problem was the series went seven games with the final one being played on Nov. 1, just days before he and Upton were set to tie the knot. Therefore, instead of flying to Italy, they remained in L.A. for the game while their friends and family were in Tuscany.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, they spoke about missing part of their wedding festivities.
“Everybody is in Italy! Everyone is at the venue!” Upton explained. “We had an event that night and everyone’s texting us like, ‘Your wedding’s so pretty, wish you were here.’”
Verlander ended up missing the Astros victory parade in Houston after they flew to Italy.
Verlander credits Upton with saving his career
Verlander is one of the best pitchers in the game but a few years back the right-hander went through a rough period and said he doesn’t know where he’d be today without Upton.
During the 2013 season, he stated feeling discomfort in his arm. He then injured his groin during a workout. An MRI showed that a tendon was separated from the bone and an diagnosed core muscle injury in his abdomen. He underwent bilateral sports hernia repair surgery in Philadelphia with Upton by his side through his recovery.
He worked hard to return to the pitching mound but in 2014 he struggled and was booed off the field by Tigers fans. It was Upton who helped him get through that difficult time.
“She was instrumental in me not…like, jumping off a bridge. I was depressed and kind of just upset at the world … She was what I needed,” Verlander explained via Bleacher Report. “I don’t like to talk to people about being hurt. As athletes, you’re not supposed to. It’s an excuse. … But she was someone I could talk to. I mean, basically a therapist.”

Verlander’s career accolades include winning the triple crown, an American League MVP, an AL Cy Young Award, and a World Series Championship.
Upton was signed to her first modeling contract when she was just 15 years old. She was the face of the fashion brand Guess and graced the cover of several magazines around the world. In 2011, she was Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit edition Rookie of the Year and went on to cover the mag several more times. She has also done ad campaigns for Express, Victoria’s Secret, and David Yurman to name a few.
In addition to her modeling career, she has made cameos and acted in a number of films including Tower Heist, The Three Stooges, and The Other Woman but if thought she had a higher net worth than her husband you’re wrong.
Upton has an estimated net worth of $20 million while Verlander, who recently inked a $66 million extension with the Astros and has also endorsed several products, has an estimated net worth of around $95 million.
