Eric Church showed a knack for music at a very young age
Church was born in Granite Falls in North Carolina on May 3, 1977, to Rita and Ken Church. His father was the president of a furniture upholstery company called Clayton Marcus, where Church used to help out.
When the singer was 13, he bought a guitar and started writing songs. By the time he got to senior year in high school, Church already had a local bar gig.
Church graduated from South Caldwell High School and pursued a degree in marketing at Appalachian State University. When he graduated from university, he got engaged to a Spanish teacher in North Carolina.
His fiancé’s father tried to persuade him to take a career in corporate finance. Church rejected the offer and instead decided to pursue music full time. He referenced this experience in the song What I Almost Was.
Church’s fiancé broke up the engagement, and he relocated to Nashville with his father’s financial help. Church’s father was also instrumental in establishing contacts for the aspiring singer and helped him find time to focus on his songwriting.
Church is known for his mystique on stage, which involves dark sunglasses and a black leather jacket. Church said that he began wearing aviator sunglasses because the stage lights used to dry his contact lenses out. As a way of preventing them from drying out, he decided to start wearing shades on stage.
The outfit soon became his trademark.
Church and his wife met through work
Katherine Blasingame was a music publisher before meeting her husband. According to Taste of Country, the two met when Blasingame tried to connect Church with one of the writers she had worked with before. The pair hit it off right away and began dating.
Church and Blasingame got married in 2008 in Westglow Spa and Resort in Blowing Rock. He wrote a song specifically for his bride called You Make It Look So Easy. In 2011 they welcomed their first son Boone McCoy Church.
In 2015 the couple was blessed with yet another son called Tennessee Hawkins, who goes by the name Hawk. After his first son was born, Church came out with the song Three Year Old which details his fatherhood journey.
Church said that he trusts his wife with his song ideas. Blasingame is a music professional in her rights, and this gives Church an edge as she acts as his sounding board. Sometimes, Blasingame even contributes some of her ideas to Church’s songs.
Blasingame and Church are one of those country couples who don’t show off their relationship. She is rarely seen with Church, aside from when the two walk the Red Carpet together.
They also don’t go on talk shows to speak about their marriage, which makes them stand out from other couples in country music.
Church and Blasingame have a non-profit organization
The country couple started a non-profit called The Chief Cares Fund in 2013. The foundation was created to help those in need around Tennessee and North Carolina.
The non-profit organization has also helped orphans and the less privileged with education, clothing, and bedding around the world. The organization also allows people to buy tickets to Church’s concerts from the foundation and the proceeds go to the charity.
