Who Is Jeffree Star?
The internet was rocked on Jan. 5 with the news that Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West are reportedly ending their marriage — but the even bigger plot twist to the Kimye story is that West is now allegedly with YouTube content creator and makeup mogul Jeffree Star.
The rumor started from a TikTok video, in which the user claims that West has been “hooking up with a very famous beauty guru — a male beauty guru.” People in the comments were quick to connect the anonymous person with Star, who has been spotted in Wyoming, where Mr. and Mrs. West have a residence. The rumor gained traction on Twitter as well, with people discussing the trending topic in shock. So who is Star, the person that TikTok users and folks on Twitter are all talking about?
Star got his start on MySpace
Star began to make a name for himself in the mid-2000s on the social media platform MySpace. He parlayed his following and notoriety from MySpace into a music career. Star released one album in 2009 called Beauty Killer, and a year later, Akon signed Star to his label Konvict Muzik, but Star never released more music.
He founded his makeup company, Jeffree Star Cosmetics, in 2014, and started to market his products via his YouTube channel, which saw an uptick in viewers around 2015.
The YouTube era
While the first video on Star’s YouTube channel is from April 2009, he really started becoming known as a YouTuber in 2015. Star uses his channel to unveil new makeup products, announcing launches and showing the items in use. He also regularly hosts other famous influencers on his channel for collaborations, such as Manny MUA, Nikita Dragun, James Charles, NikkieTutorials, and even Kardashian West.
Star’s videos on YouTube showcase his immense wealth in an over-the-top fashion — doing videos in Rolls Royce cars, private jet planes, and mansions. Star routinely touts his seemingly endless supply of designer brands, often donning Gucci and Louis Vuitton.
Star is no stranger to controversy
Star has been involved in many scandals during his time as an online personality. Below is a non-comprehensive list of Star’s scandals:
- He used the phrase “lipstick nazi” and posed for a photo in front of a Confederate flag, which he addressed in a June 2020 tweet.
- He called Jackie Aina, another YouTube creator, a “gorilla,” per College Candy.
- He used the N-word in one of his songs.
- He created a Cremated palette through his makeup collection during the height of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
- He had a “feud” with Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick’s child, Mason Disick, calling the boy “spoiled.”
- He alleged James Charles used “words r*pists would use” and participated in the “Bye Sister” YouTube scandal of May 2018.
Since for now, West and Star’s alleged hook up is just a rumor, it remains to be seen if the two are really together. But there’s no doubt if these two are actually an item, Star will want to have West on his YouTube channel ASAP as that collaboration would surely bring in the views.
