He’s already started to bring the idea to life with “Flippy” the burger-flipping robot that performs some tasks at CaliBurger’s Pasadena restaurant.

Why some people have criticized his restaurants

If Miller’s CaliBurger restaurants look a little familiar, there’s a reason. They’re deliberately modeled after In-N-Out, the California fast-food chain that regularly tops lists of the best burgers in America.

When CaliBurger opened its first restaurant in China in 2012, it advertised “animal style” fries and “double-double” burgers. Those are terms In-N-Out owns. In-N-Out promptly sued and got CaliBurger to change the item names on the menu, though the underlying similarities remain.

But one thing Miller hasn’t been able to replicate is In-N-Out’s quality burgers, say critics. LA Mag described the chain’s burgers as “flaccid, unseasoned, gray-ish discs of beef.” Ouch.

Miller is currently in the process of getting divorced from violinist Caroline Campbell, who he married in 2005 and with whom he has two children. Campbell has said that she and her husband had difficulty communicating and that his fast-paced, argumentative style was partly to blame, US Weekly reported. According to Campbell, Miller “is accustomed to being the CEO of companies he starts … [and] feels satisfaction from controlling me and making me pay the price for ending the marriage.”
