Richard Rankin is a Scottish actor who grew up in Glasgow’s West End. At the age of 22, after studying computer science at Glasgow Caledonian University, he decided to pursue a career in acting.
Along with some theater and film, Rankin has appeared in a number of TV series over the years. He’s was a regular on two BBC series: Burnistoun, in which he had various roles; and The Crimson Field, in which he played Captain Thomas Gillan.
Rankin has also been on episodes of The Last Kingdom, American Odyssey, The Syndicate, and The Replacement. In 2019, he appeared on the BBC medical drama, Trust Me, as Dr. Alex Keirnan.
Currently, the actor plays Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) Fraser’s son-in-law, Roger MacKenzie, on the Starz drama, Outlander.

When Rankin appeared in the BBC One drama, The Syndicate, many speculated he was dating his co-star Cara Theobold. While the two were seen out and about at events together, they never confirmed that they were in a relationship.
Now, as Rankin plays Brianna’s love interest in Outlander, many fans are wondering if he shares the same chemistry with Sophie Skelton off-screen. While the two actors are often seen promoting the show together, there’s no indication they are dating. For the most part, it looks like their relationship is purely platonic.

After listening to his interviews and perusing through his Instagram, it’s clear that Rankin likes to keep details about his dating life private. The 37-year-old actor’s Instagram page is filled with his photography — something he takes pretty seriously.
Last year, Rankin hosted a photography exhibit in Brooklyn which featured over two dozen of his prints. When talking to Fox News, the actor revealed that he started dabbling in photography 10 years ago, and would like to get behind a film camera someday. “I’m always getting involved with other departments on set,” he told the outlet, “to see what everyone’s doing and how it all works.”
On his Instagram page, Rankin hasn’t shared any pictures of his own romances. But last year, he did share some candid snaps of an adorable couple during their marriage proposal.
“So pretty much the most wonderful thing happened today as I was minding my own business, taking pictures of a bench,” he captioned the photos. “This beautiful man proposed to this beautiful gal and she said yes! Thought my heart was gonna burst they were SO HAPPY!!!”
It’s clear that Rankin has a penchant for romance, just like Roger. But, he’s also a very private person, and if he is dating someone, he doesn’t want the world to know.
