Who is Stephen Strasburg’s Wife, Rachel Lackey?
Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg is one of the best in baseball today. The Nats selected him with the first pick in the 2009 MLB Draft and he made his first major league start in 2010.
Even after all these years in the league, the three-time All-Star has always managed to remain super private about his personal life. However, after his children made a rare public appearance at Nationals Park on Oct. 1, fans have been trying to find out more about his family and his wife, Rachel Lackey.
Strasburg and Lackey were college sweethearts
Strasburg was born on July 20, 1988. He attended high school in Santee, California, and was recruited by several colleges but chose San Diego State University where both of his parents went. It was there that he met his future wife.
Lackey was also an athlete in school as she played water polo in high school. The pair dated for 18 months before Strasberg popped the question and they tied the knot in 2010.
“The couple wed Jan. 9 at a small outdoor ceremony at South Coast Winery near San Diego, the warmest spot in the United States that day,” the Washington Post reported. “She wore a strapless white lace gown; her bridesmaids wore fuchsia. Then the newlyweds headed to Hawaii for their honeymoon. The groom was allowed to skip all the Nationals offseason publicity programs but spent every other day working on his arm.”
Lackey had trouble getting past security for Strasburg’s first start
Strasburg made his major league debut for the Nationals on June 8, 2010, but Lackey almost missed his start when she got held up by security.
USA Today noted that Lackey arrived to the ballpark several hours early that day but had trouble getting past security and up to her suite after she stopped at the team’s gift shop.
“I’m Stephen Strasburg’s wife. I’m his wife,” Lackey said and explained that she was supposed to already be up in the suite but had to pick up a T-shirt.
Park officials then let her by and she was able to see her husband take the mound.
How many children they have
Strasburg and Lackey have two children together. Their oldest daughter was born in October 2013. The couple then welcomed their second daughter in April 2017.
After the birth of his first child, Reagan, Strasburg talked about how his priorities changed.
“The priority of being a good dad is more important to me. I think looking back, maybe I did put a little too much emphasis on baseball. Maybe it wasn’t my only thing I was worried about. But it was definitely higher up there than I thought it was,” he explained.
Strasburg also revealed what he likes best about being a dad.
“It’s just coming home and making her laugh,” he said. “That’s the coolest thing. When they start to think you’re funny, then it’s over. Because you just want to make them laugh all the time.”
