Why Ashanti Isn’t Rushing to Get Married
Ashanti is in no rush to find a groom. The singer and songwriter, who recently made Billboard chart history, is more focused on her career than the title of wife. Though she does have love in her life, she says marriage is only an option if it’s under the right circumstances.
She wants to ensure her marriage is forever
Ashanti has been in public relationships but has always remained mum on the personal details. At 41-years-old and not having a family of her own, she’s constantly questioned about her love life.
Though she previously dreamed of walking down the aisle to her prince charming, the singer has different viewpoints on marriage and relationships now. While companionship is what she desires, that doesn’t necessarily equate to marriage. If she does decide to say “I Do,” she says it has to be forever.
“There have been situations that were very, very close to that,” she said in an interview with The New York Post. “I just want it to be the right person. My parents have been married for, like, 40-plus years. So, you know, that’s kind of like the template for me.”
Her parents, Ken-Kaide and Tina Douglas, both work with the star. Tina has been Ashanti’s manager for her entire career. Her father is also involved in her business. The family remains close, living in their native town of Long Island, New York.
The singer was in a decades-long relationship with Nelly
Ashanti and Nelly began dating in 2003. Several breakups and makeups before a final split in 2014 occurred due to Nelly’s alleged infidelity. At one point, the rapper planned to propose. It’s unclear if they ever did get engaged before breaking things off.
“There were good times, and there were times where it was hard… just traveling so much and living in two different states,” she added in her New York Post interview. “Our careers were, like, taking off back then. It was really hard to try and just do everything.” Ashanti rose to fame as a huge collaborator of Ja Rule’s.
He then moved on to model Shantel Jackson, to who he was engaged to as well. The couple confirmed their split last year. Though Jackson said their split may not be permanent and they were just taking a cooling-off period. She appeared with him in his BET reality series.
She previously shot down rumors that she’s dating Flo Rida but is in a relationship she’s keeping out of the spotlight
Nelly isn’t the only person to give love another shot. In a recent interview with The Breakfast Club, Ashanti told the hosts that she is dating someone exclusively but prefers to keep his identity under wraps.
“I have never in my life posted a dude that I’m dealing with, ever,” she said regarding not sharing her love life publicly, especially by posting on social media. “I mean, maybe Nelly on a flyer or something like that, like 100 years ago. But nothing like, ‘Oh, we’re together.’ Never. I like to keep things private.”
For years, there have been rumors that she’s dating Flo Rida as they’ve often vacationed together. But she denies such. “Let the people know, Ashanti is not with Flo Rida,” she said after DJ Envy hinted to knowing who her beau is. “Be clear. That’s my brother. Me and Flo are super cool.”
