Why Can’t Fans Let Go of the Idea That Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Will End up Together?
The relationship between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez might be among the most heavily followed and commented on celebrity relationships in recent history. Similar to the tale of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, fans are having a hard time letting go of a love that seems to be entirely in the books. Now married to Hailey Baldwin, Bieber is moving on. Fresh off a stint in a mental health facility, Gomez is looking to put herself back out there. If they can move on, why can’t their fans?
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’s dating timeline
Gomez and Bieber revealed their relationship to the world in February 2011, according to People. The couple, however, had been spotted together for months before their first red carpet event. Gomez was just 18 years old at the time, and Bieber was 17.
The pair called it quits in November 2012, but by the following year, there were rumors of a reconciliation. By September 2014 the couple was officially back on, at least, according to court documents. In the fall of 2014, they were spotted together in Paris for Fashion Week, according to Elle.
Things seemed pretty quiet through 2015, but in summer of 2016 they former flames had a famous blowout on Social Media. In fact, it resulted in Bieber briefly deleting his Instagram feed. By January 2017, Gomez was dating The Weeknd, and Bieber had a definite issue with his ex’s new relationship.
In October 2017, Gomez and The Weeknd reported their split. Allegedly it happened prior to Gomez being spotted with Bieber again, according to Elle. In February 2018, Gomez joined Bieber at his father’s wedding in Jamaica, but by May 2018 the pair had officially called it quits for good, according to Seventeen.
Why is everyone still obsessed with Jelena?
In the early days of their relationship, Gomez received plenty of hate from rabid Bieber fans. Once their relationship seemed here to stay, however, supporters backed off a bit. Now, it looks like the only person fans believe Bieber belongs with is Gomez, and no other lady friend will do.
When Bieber dated Sophia Richie, who is now dating Scott Disick, the world roasted the then 17-year-old. When Hailey Baldwin entered the picture, fans took to every social media platform imaginable to lambast the model.
The reason behind the obsession is hard to figure out, though. Perhaps its because Bieber and Gomez were the perfect picture of young love, maybe it’s because their on-again-off-again relationship has continued to fill fans with hope for years. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, fans are simply not letting the concept of Jelena go. It doesn’t seem to matter that both Bieber and Gomez have moved on.
Bieber married Baldwin back in September 2018. Gomez, after checking herself into a hospital for mental health concerns, alleges she is ready to date again, according to Cosmopolitan. It looks like fans are going to need to accept that Jelena isn’t going to happen again.
Hailey Baldwin is regularly the target of hate
Baldwin has been on the receiving end of hostility from Selena Gomez fans ever since she accidentally found herself in the middle of a love triangle back in 2016. The 22-year-old model briefly dated Bieber while he was on a break from his on-again-off-again girlfriend. When the relationship didn’t pan out, and Bieber found himself back in Gomez’s good graces, fans backed off. It was short-lived, though. The second Baldwin was, once again, spotted with Bieber the hate kicked back up.
Baldwin told W Magazine that she regularly has to take breaks from social media to protect her mental health. Most of the negative comments are levied at the model because of her marriage to Bieber. Simply put, no one seems to think their marriage is sacred, and fans continue to hold onto a tired narrative – the theory that Baldwin is some sort of homewrecker.
Truth be told, Gomez and Bieber had a traditional story of young love. They got together, broke up, and got back together again. While their relationship might be a beloved ‘ship, it’s unlikely that Baldwin is what caused the final rift between the pair. Fans, however, are not hearing it.
