Henry Cavill is very dedicated to the role of Geralt in The Witcher. He is a fan of both the books and the video games based on them. He also, according to an interview with Polygon, relates to Geralt’s character a lot. Cavill “really [feels] a connection to Geralt.”

The character “felt very familiar to [him] from the very beginning.” This could be, as he says, because he is a fan of the fantasy genre. Often, “a lot of these characters have similar links to one another.” However, it could also be because he sees himself in Geralt.

When asked about how he can relate to Geralt, Cavill says “Geralt always wants to do the right thing….His goal is to do the right thing, make the right choice, and protect the people who need protecting. But he’s also very willing to do some of the necessary, harder things that are required.” Cavill can relate to that last part, citing his “military upbringing.”

He can also relate to Geralt’s approach to politics, saying that “the way he looks upon some of the machinations of politics may match [Cavill’s] own” perspective. His personal connection to the character of Geralt in The Witcher might make this more than just another role to Henry Cavill, which is why he might especially appreciate fans watching and enjoying the show.

Playing Geralt of Rivia in ‘The Witcher’ is definitely ‘not just a role’ for Henry Cavill

According to The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, in an interview with NME, it is “not just a role to him.” Hissrich tells NME that “He wanted, for instance, for the armor to look like it had been worn for years and years.” To accomplish this, Cavill would make breakfast and sleep in his costume. “He’s that invested in embodying his character,” Hissrich adds.

Part of the reason for this might be not only his love for the character of Geralt but his love for the fantasy genre itself. Cavill told the Associated Press that he “[lives] in the fantasy genre anyway, that’s [his] hobby.” According to Cavill, he “always wanted to bring things like this to the screen in one way, shape or form.” This love for the genre itself may be another reason that Henry Cavill is so excited that fans are watching and enjoying The Witcher.
