Why Isn’t ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Coming Back Until December?
Fans of the Power franchise are used to getting ten consecutive episodes before the end of each season. But Power Book II: Ghost is following another format.
The first season of the hit crime drama has been split into two parts, with the first five episodes airing in September and October and the other five debuting some time in December. This delay has had fans pretty anxious but for what it’s worth, there’s a reason the show is airing in two parts.
Why ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ isn’t returning until December
According to Entertainment Weekly, the show took a break to continue filming episodes. The report mentions that production was halted as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has so far affected more than 7 million Americans and has caused over 200,000 deaths in the country (via The New York Times), “leading to a split season and [Oct. 4’s] ‘The Gift of the Magi’ serving as the midseason finale.”
Offering an update on filming, actor LaToya Tonodeo (Diana Tejada) told Decider in September: “We are back filming. We are starting up Episode 9 because we were shut down in March at Episode 8. We have two more episodes to finish and so far, so good! I feel like everyone is getting back into the groove, finding their footing and their place and their essence. Just bringing these characters back to life so that we can finish Season 1 strong.”
What fans can expect to happen when ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ returns
There will be a lot to answer for when the show finally does come back from its hiatus. Among the notable events in the midseason finale include Cooper Saxe overhearing Tariq admitting to killing Ghost, the Tejada family finally embracing Tariq (or so it seems), and Tasha seemingly getting closer to getting out of jail.
When asked for more plot details, showrunner and creator Courtney Kemp told Entertainment Weekly: “It gets so much more intense. All of the relationships get much more complicated. Tariq has make some decisions, some familiar faces from Power show back up. It’s intense.”
She wouldn’t elaborate, but there is widespread speculation that one of the “familiar faces” will be Tommy Egan. In the finale of the original season, Tommy left New York and moved to California in hopes of a new start following the death of his girlfriend Lakeisha Grant. However, he was pulled back into the mix earlier in the season of Power Book II: Ghost when Tasha accused him of killing her husband.
“I don’t know: If somebody said in court that I did something that I didn’t do, I might feel compelled to show up, maybe, and talk to them about it?” Kemp added in another interview with TVLine.
